Overview / Responsibilities





Wood Process and Energy are seeking Senior Technical Safety Engineering services (Process Safety) to support our team in Darlington, UK on a 6 month contract. The role is a contractor role suitable for an established Technical Safety Engineer.

 

The Operations business provides services to brownfield and greenfield projects across multiple sectors including Oil & Gas, refining, petrochemicals, bulk and fine chemicals and pharma. Wood Darlington also provides support in specialist areas such as Hydrogen, CCS and new technology. Our Technical Safety team also provide specialist support to other parts of the business including consultancy services and provision of independent safety review co-ordinators and facilitators.

 

You will join the technical safety team which provides services to projects across multiple sectors covering the whole life cycle, typically from concept to EPC, and operational support. 

 

You will work alongside engineers and designers from all disciplines to ensure effective safety and environmental practices are adopted and risk management processes observed. This includes providing support to meet obligations imposed by the CDM regulations in the UK.

 

 

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Produce Technical Safety engineering deliverables required for project execution.
  • Develop safety engineering philosophies, design HSE plans, safety specifications, equipment specifications and monitor contractor/vendor compliance to these.
  • Lead and report formal process safety assessments such as HAZID, HAZOP and SIL target setting studies.
  • Input to, and participation at project design assurance reviews such as P&ID reviews, HAZCON, Constructability reviews.
  • Coordinate external specialist consultants’ safety studies and specialist services
  • Support to projects on regulatory requirements including COMAH, DSEAR, PSR, PUWER,  and CDM.
  • Carryout active and passive fire protection assessments including, but not limited to, fire risk assessments, fire protection philosophies, fire water demand calculations, fire water adequacy checks, hydraulic calculations using PIPENET spray/sprinkler module and fire water system adequacy checks and performance monitoring.
  • Provide services including QRA, EERA, dispersion modelling, thermal radiation and blast modelling
  • Develop and implement functional safety management plans (BS EN-61511).
  • Provide technical support to projects and sites as required
  • Produce and review specifications, data sheets, schedules, study reports, and design calculations; ensuring that they conform to engineering quality, competence, and project management systems
  • Attend client meetings and communicate issues with lead engineer as required
  • Adhere to and comply with relevant discipline specific procedures and provide feedback for continuous improvement
  • Ensure awareness of relevant regulatory framework, legislative changes, initiatives and industry technology developments
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of process safety and environmental engineering methodologies, software systems, and design practices as they relate to FEED, Detail Design, Construction, Commissioning, and plant Start-up
  • Provision of guidance and support on appropriate safety and environmental engineering
  • Assist Project Management to assess risks both qualitatively and quantitatively, while making major engineering decisions.   
  • Awareness of international codes and standards





Qualifications





Essential:

  • Engineering degree in a relevant subject such as Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Relevant work experience, refining and petrochemical experience
  • Applicants should be able to obtain a UK security clearance

 

Desirable:

  • Chartered Engineer
  • Post-graduate qualification in process safety related subjects
  • Awareness of process operations and/or brownfield modifications
  • Experienced user of industry standard software packages such as PIPENET, DNV PHAST, exSILentia, PHA Pro, HAZOP Manager
  • Certified Functional Safety Engineer
  • Certified Hazard Study leader
  • DSEAR risk assessment experience
  • CDM awareness
