Shift Engineer

When production depends on machinery performing safely and reliably, the quality of engineering support on shift makes a genuine difference. As a Shift Engineer, you’ll keep critical equipment moving, solve electrical and mechanical faults and help prevent problems from coming back.
 
This is a hands-on, multi-skilled position within a fast-paced food manufacturing environment. You’ll balance planned and reactive maintenance with fault finding, improvement projects and root-cause problem solving, while helping the site improve reliability, safety and overall engineering performance.

£48,000 salary.
4 on, 4 off shift pattern, working 6am–6pm with a one-hour unpaid break.

Your responsibilities as Shift Engineer

Deliver planned and reactive maintenance, using the site maintenance management system to maximise equipment availability and minimise production disruption.
Fault find across electrical and mechanical machinery, identifying root causes and implementing effective, lasting repairs.
Support production during breakdowns and start-ups, responding quickly where safety, product integrity, animal welfare or operational performance could be affected.
Use problem-solving and continuous improvement techniques to eliminate recurring faults, abnormalities and inefficiencies.
Support projects and factory improvements, including opportunities to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.
Maintain high standards across health and safety, food safety, GMP and engineering compliance, including appropriate risk assessments and escalation of issues. 
What we’re looking for in a Shift Engineer

A UK-recognised electrical or mechanical qualification at NVQ Level 3, equivalent or above, with relevant electrical/mechanical conversion qualifications.
Electrical and mechanical fault-finding capability, alongside the ability to understand engineering drawings.
Basic PLC I/O knowledge and a good understanding of drives, motors, brakes, transmissions, closed-loop feedback systems and transducers.
Food manufacturing experience, particularly poultry processing, would be advantageous, alongside knowledge of SCADA, machine control systems or VSD programming.
Additional qualifications or capabilities such as BS 7671:2018, recognised health and safety training, fabrication skills or a MEWP licence would be beneficial.
