Role summary The Site Manager has day-to-day accountability for planning, coordinating and delivering allocated SGN MRP projects. The role leads site operations to achieve meterage and programme commitments without compromising safety, compliance, quality or customer service. The Site Manager provides visible leadership, maintains accurate site records and escalates risks or constraints early to the Head of Operations.
Role purpose
To lead the safe, compliant, efficient and customer-focused delivery of mains and service replacement activities across allocated projects. The Site Manager converts the agreed programme into practical daily and weekly plans, coordinates resources and interfaces, monitors meterage and productivity, and takes timely action to maintain or recover delivery performance.
Key responsibilities
Planning and work readiness
• Develop and maintain detailed daily, weekly and six-week delivery plans for all allocated projects.
• Confirm each work front is fully enabled before mobilisation, including vacex, permits, notices, drawings, work packs, traffic management, access, materials, plant, labour, competencies, customer arrangements and reinstatement interfaces. • Sequence work efficiently to maximise productive time, reduce hand-offs and avoid unnecessary disruption or remobilisation.
• Provide accurate programme updates, forecasts, comments and readiness status to the Head of Operations and programme team.
• Identify constraints and delivery risks early, assign clear actions and dates, and escalate matters that cannot be resolved within the Site Manager's authority.
Delivery of meterage and programme targets
• Take ownership of weekly and monthly meterage targets for allocated projects and teams.
• Translate contract and programme commitments into clear daily outputs for operatives and subcontractors.
• Monitor actual meterage, productivity, gang performance and completion dates against plan each day.
• Ensure labour, plant, materials, support functions and subcontractors are correctly deployed to achieve the required output.
• Investigate shortfalls promptly, remove operational barriers and implement practical recovery plans agreed with the Head of Operations.
• Provide realistic forecasts and never overstate readiness, progress or expected completion.
3.3 Safety leadership • Provide visible and consistent safety leadership across all allocated sites and teams. • Ensure work is undertaken in accordance with legislation, SGN requirements, client procedures, approved risk assessments, method statements and permits. • Confirm daily activity briefings and task-specific briefings are completed, understood and recorded. • Undertake planned site inspections, safety conversations and assurance checks, recording findings and closing actions within agreed timescales. • Stop work where there is an immediate or unacceptable risk and ensure the activity is made safe before recommencement. • Ensure incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions and environmental events are reported promptly and supported with accurate evidence. • Monitor excavation safety, temporary works, lifting operations, plant movements, public protection, welfare, housekeeping and site security.
Knowledge, experience and qualifications
• Proven site management or senior supervisory experience in gas distribution, utilities, civil engineering or comparable infrastructure.
• Track record of delivering programmes, meterage and productivity targets through multiple teams and subcontractors.
• Strong knowledge of construction safety, excavation, streetworks, traffic management, public protection, environmental and quality controls.
• Able to interpret programmes, drawings, risk assessments, method statements, permits and performance information.
• Customer and stakeholder management experience in a live streetworks environment.
• SMSTS, NRSWA Supervisor, first aid and relevant gas/utility competencies; temporary works awareness where required.
• Full UK driving licence and sufficient digital reporting skills Only candidates based in UK and eligible to work in UK are allowed
