Planning Engineer - Driving High‑Impact Projects From Concept to Completion
This role places the Planning Engineer at the centre of developing, operating, and monitoring contract programmes that ensure complex industrial projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. The successful candidate will thrive in a structured, collaborative environment and play a pivotal role in shaping project outcomes.
Role Purpose
The Planning Engineer is responsible for developing, operating, and monitoring contract programmes for the defined work scope, ensuring full control and successful execution within agreed budgets and timelines.
Key Accountabilities
Produces all required programmes at the appropriate stages to meet overall contract requirements. Monitors and updates contract programmes through regular engagement with all relevant stakeholders. Identifies and communicates critical path deviations, enabling management to take timely corrective action. Optimises the use of approved software tools to meet all planning and reporting obligations. Integrates emergent works effectively into existing programmes. Reports progress against programme and records delays with clear reasoning.
Key Duties
Produces detailed project programmes. Continuously monitors programme performance. Incorporates programme variations and assesses their impact. Provides programme reports to clients and internal management. Anticipates critical path issues and recommends remedial actions. Allocates estimated costs to programme activities and supports programme baselining. Develops and communicates resource requirements to meet project timescales. Analyses Earned Value performance to support project control.
Experience Required
Demonstrable experience as an Assistant or Trainee Planning Engineer. Relevant experience within the Petrochemical, Power, or Process industry sectors. Ability to develop feasible programmes from defined scopes of work. Strong communication skills for accurate reporting and stakeholder liaison. Proven ability to identify and escalate critical programme issues. Proficiency in Primavera P6 and Excel, delivering accurate and timely information. Awareness of technical interfaces and their impact on planning. Understanding of how planning influences safety, quality, and cost.
Qualifications
Relevant HNC/Degree qualification. QCF Diploma Level 3/5 in Planning. APMP Practitioner certification. Craft training supported by ongoing CPD.
