Site Technician - Electrical Protection & Control Systems

Position Status: Permanent

Location: Base in Stone, Staffordshire (with regular UK-wide travel to client sites)

Department: Energy

Reports To: Site Coordinator

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Site Technician with an electrical wiring background to join our Energy Team. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for the on-site assembly, wiring, and modification of protection and control systems for transmission, distribution, and power generation projects across the UK.

Working closely with Site Managers and Commissioning Engineers, you will carry out electrical testing for safety prior to system commissioning, construct test rigs, and ensure high-quality installation standards on site.

Note: This position involves regular travel around the UK to customer sites. Flexibility and a willingness to work away from home are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Site Wiring & Mechanical Assembly

Assembly & Wiring: Wire, modify, and assemble electrical protection and control systems using schematic drawings, parts lists, and specifications.

Cabling & Terminations: Install and terminate paired, multicore, copper, and fiber optic (FO) communications cables, including glanding.

Mechanical Containment & Framing: Assemble cubicles, framework, desks, cable trays, and ladder racking.

Test Rig Preparation: Assist the hardware team with building, configuring, and testing temporary rigs and client cubicles off-site and on-site.

Testing, Inspection & Safety Compliance

Electrical Safety Checks: Perform LVD electrical safety checks, earth bond continuity tests, point-to-point wiring checks, insulation resistance tests, high-voltage withstand tests, and system power-ups/fusing functionality checks.

Isolations: Act as an appointed person to complete isolations and work on test rigs.

Quality Assurance: Maintain inspection check sheets (ITP check sheets), identify reworks, and manage issue logs in coordination with Site Managers and design/commissioning engineers.

Site Preparation: Collaborate with the Site Manager/Supervisor to ensure all project deliverables, materials, and tooling are ready for deployment.

Candidate Profile

Essential Requirements

Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience as a site-based wireperson.

Sector Background: Proven experience in EC&I (Electrical, Control & Instrumentation) installations, such as Substation Control Systems or Protection Systems, preferably on National Grid sites.

Technical Skills: Ability to read, interpret, and work from circuit diagrams, general assembly prints, wiring schedules, and parts lists.

Travel: Willingness to travel regularly and stay away at client sites across the UK as required.

Licence: Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable Criteria

Formal apprenticeship background with the ability to undertake minor site installation works.

Industry Certifications: National Grid Person status, SSSTS (Site Supervisors' Safety Training Scheme), 18th Edition BS 7671 wiring regulations, ARC Flash awareness, or PASMA certification.

Safety Training: Impressed Voltages, Asbestos Awareness, Confined Space Awareness, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
