  • Hours: Full time, 9am - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday – Term Time Only (39 weeks per year)

Purpose of the role

 

To work within a team to support the teaching of life skills and bespoke learning pathways to students with severe learning disabilities. This will be both within the centre and in the wider community.

 

To provide support to students who need individual help to overcome barriers to learning, such as those with additional communication, social, emotional, physical or medical needs.

 

Specific duties

 

Teaching and learning:

 

  • work with individuals or small group 

  • to encourage independence both in routines and within tasks

  • to adapt tasks to consider students’ interests and motivators

  • to support students to develop their interests

  • undertake a range of more specialised tasks to support learning e.g. using sign language, Symbol Communication to support student learning

  • support off-site activities such as sports and exercise, supported work experience and using community amenities

  • maintain records of pupil needs and progress, including planning and observations

  • to be involved in planning the next steps for students.

 

Personal and wellbeing support:

 

  • attend to physical and care needs to include intimate care, gastrostomy feeding and dressing

  • supporting the management of health needs such as managing a student during seizure, administration of medication in line with policy, and implementing therapy programmes provided by the Multi-Disciplinary Team

  • undertake first aid

  • have a therapeutic approach to behaviour management, including working as part of the team to identify students' sensory and communication needs and developing strategies to support.

 

Resources:

 

  • to adapt resources/ methods to allow students to access the learning

  • support team to maintain a safe and tidy environment.

 

Person Specification

 

Essential: 

 

  • ability to undertake training on specific medical conditions, interventions and resources used

  • ability to work as part of a team to meet the needs of the students

  • ability to read and understand instructions

  • ability to complete written observations and any paperwork required e.g. behaviour incident

  • ability to recognise and resolve or report problems

  • ability to think creatively

  • to be sensitive to student needs 

  • ability to communicate clearly 

  • to be an effective team member 

  • commitment to maintaining confidentiality

  • ability to support students within physical activities

  • attend to the intimate care needs of students when required

  • commitment to safeguarding and promoting the well-being of the young people.

 

Desired:

 

  • previous experience of working with adults or children with special needs

  • awareness of learning disabilities, ASC, epilepsy and communication difficulties

  • previous experience of using AAC

  • previous experience of working within a therapeutic approach.
