My client is looking to recruit a Supervising Solicitor to help support the team.

Overall Responsibility

Reporting to the Head of Legal Services, the Supervising Solicitor will lead, manage, and mentor a team of Paralegals, contributing to the delivery of a comprehensive and high-quality in-house legal service. The role supports the Housing Services, Property, and Customer Services functions, with a focus on tenancy and leasehold management law, including possession proceedings, disrepair claims, anti-social behaviour, service charge disputes, and other related matters.

Main Accountabilities

• Lead, develop, and manage a high-performing team of Paralegals and/or trainees, ensuring effective support across all legal service functions.
• Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and continuous development of junior legal staff to build a cohesive and capable department.
• Mentor and support team members in achieving professional qualifications and advancing their legal careers.
• Monitor and review legal advice and casework to ensure high standards of quality, timeliness, and compliance with professional and regulatory standards.
• Track team performance against key performance indicators (KPIs) and service level expectations.
• Provide recommendations on best practices, performance improvements, and learning opportunities to senior legal leadership.
• Ensure accurate reporting and tracking of legal workstreams, including litigation progress and outcomes.
• Design and deliver legal training on housing and property law to internal stakeholders.
• Collaborate with senior managers and cross-functional teams to protect organisational interests.
• Manage a varied litigation caseload, including possession proceedings, anti-social behaviour, disrepair claims, and leasehold/service charge disputes.
• Conduct regular case review meetings with internal clients to ensure alignment and progress.
• Draft legal documents including claim forms, pleadings, applications, and witness statements.
• Apply cost rules and procedures, including negotiation and assessment of legal costs.
• Represent the organisation as an advocate in County and Magistrates’ Courts and Residential Property Tribunals.
• Instruct counsel and external experts in complex cases.
• Negotiate settlements, quantify damages, and resolve disputes efficiently and economically.
• Conduct legal research and propose innovative legal solutions to avoid or resolve litigation.
• Maintain accurate records of litigation timelines, court deadlines, and case milestones.
• Uphold the highest professional and ethical standards in line with regulatory requirements.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

• Qualified Solicitor (England & Wales) or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives (FILEX).
• Minimum 7 years’ post-qualification experience in housing law, ideally representing social landlords.
• In-depth knowledge of housing and leasehold legislation, litigation procedures, and case law.
• Proven ability to manage a substantial housing litigation caseload, including anti-social behaviour, disrepair, and possession claims.
• Experience in negotiating settlements and managing legal costs.
