Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialist Occupational Therapist in Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust to join the National Spinal Injuries Centre Team at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. You will be responsible for assessing, treating and evaluating patients with spinal cord injuries and complex needs, working as an autonomous practitioner within a specialist multidisciplinary team. You will provide expert advice, guidance and information to healthcare professionals, social care colleagues, carers and relatives, while supporting ongoing clinical and service development and contributing to wider organisational objectives.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible for contributing to the effective functioning of the Occupational Therapy and wider interdisciplinary teams. You will undertake specialised, comprehensive and standardised assessments for individuals presenting with complex and diverse needs. You will apply clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice to identify appropriate therapeutic approaches and formulate individualised treatment plans using a wide range of intervention options. You will analyse and interpret both clinical and non-clinical information to develop accurate and holistic assessments, working under the guidance of Advanced Occupational Therapists where appropriate.

Job Roles & Responsibilities

* To formulate appropriate problem lists and establish meaningful treatment goals, selecting suitable outcome measures to monitor and evaluate patient progress throughout the occupational therapy pathway.

* To determine the most appropriate environment for occupational therapy interventions, considering patient needs and clinical requirements across ward, department and community settings.

* To assess and manage complex manual handling requirements, applying appropriate techniques and ensuring compliance with organisational policies when handling patients or using specialist equipment.

* To assess equipment requirements and make appropriate recommendations or referrals to relevant providers, ensuring equipment is suitable for the individual and complies with departmental procedures.

* To provide supervision, support and training to junior staff, students and therapy support workers, including appropriate delegation of tasks and guidance on clinical practice.

* To maintain accurate clinical documentation and professional records, ensuring patient information is recorded in accordance with legal, professional, departmental and Trust requirements.

Person Specifications & Qualifications

* Occupational Therapy degree or diploma.

* HCPC registered Occupational Therapist.

* Minimum 3 years relevant post-registration experience.

* Experience in hand therapy, powered mobility and neurological conditions.

* Experience supervising junior staff, maintaining CPD and travelling between sites with a driving licence and car.
