Part-Time Speech and Language Therapist Independent Specialist Day College
Location: Stoke-on-Trent (ST2)
Start Date: September 2025
Contract: Academic year, term-time only (Sept 2025 July 2026, likely to continue year-on-year)
Hours: 1 day per week (potential for additional days, subject to confirmation)
Rate: Dependent on experience / banding

The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Speech and Language Therapist (SaLT) to join an Independent Specialist Day College supporting young people aged 1625 with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities, including moderate to profound complex needs and additional diagnoses such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

This is an opportunity to make a genuine difference in a setting that places a strong emphasis on community engagement, preparing students for life beyond education, and enabling them to achieve their personal aspirations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments and produce detailed reports to inform EHCP reviews, including evidence to support changes to student needs.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualised therapy programmes, with clear targets and progress tracking.
  • Provide direct interventions and support to students, promoting communication development in both educational and community settings.
  • Collaborate closely with the colleges communication team (3 TAs, 2 teachers, and an AI specialist) as well as pathway leads and curriculum heads.
  • Deliver training both formal and informal to teaching assistants and wider staff to ensure therapy strategies are embedded in daily practice.
  • Liaise with parents and carers where appropriate to ensure continuity of support.
  • Use Makaton as part of your communication approach, supporting the colleges commitment to accessible communication for all students.

About the Setting
The college supports approximately 230 students, all with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), and works closely with Hearing Impairment (HI) and Visual Impairment (VI) services. The focus is on holistic development, communication skills, and preparing students for work, further education, or independent living.

Requirements

  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy and HCPC registration.
  • Experience working with young people with complex needs and/or autism.
  • Skilled in delivering both direct interventions and indirect support through programme development and staff training.
  • Confident using Makaton.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

Benefits

  • Flexible, term-time working pattern.
  • Supportive multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Opportunity to make a tangible impact in a specialist further education setting.
