TeacherActive is looking for an experienced Speech & Language Teaching Assistant / Speech & Language Support Practitioner to join a specialist SEND school in the DE15 area.

The school supports children and young people with a range of additional needs, and we are particularly interested in candidates who have experience providing speech, language and communication support.

You could come from a SEND Teaching Assistant, Speech and Language Therapy, SALT Assistant, Communication Support or specialist education background. What is essential is relevant hands-on experience and the ability to build positive relationships with pupils who have complex needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Providing targeted speech, language and communication support
• Working with pupils on a 1:1 basis and within small groups
• Supporting pupils with speech and language disorders and communication difficulties
• Delivering activities and interventions set by Speech and Language Therapists or other professionals
• Using visual aids, communication tools and alternative communication strategies where appropriate
• Encouraging pupils to develop their confidence, communication and social interaction
• Adapting activities to meet individual communication and learning needs
• Supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour or become dysregulated
• Recording progress and communicating effectively with teachers and other professionals
• Creating a calm, consistent and supportive environment for pupils

The Successful Applicant Will:

• Have relevant experience supporting speech, language and communication needs
• Have experience working with children or young people with SEND
• Be confident providing individualised communication support
• Be resilient, patient and able to remain calm in challenging situations
• Have excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills
• Understand that behaviour can be a form of communication
• Be able to build trusting and professional relationships with pupils
• Be adaptable and comfortable working with a range of complex needs
• Have a genuine passion for helping pupils develop their communication and independence

Experience with SALT programmes, Makaton, PECS, AAC or other communication strategies would be highly desirable.
