About SGN
SGN is a leading gas distribution network in the UK, playing a critical
role in delivering safe, reliable, and affordable gas to homes and businesses
across Scotland and the south of England. As the energy landscape rapidly
transforms towards a Net Zero future, we are at the forefront of innovation,
exploring and investing in new technologies like hydrogen and biomethane, and
optimising our existing infrastructure for efficiency and sustainability.
Our company values are Safety, Reliability, Innovation, Openness, and
Respect. These values guide everything we do, from our daily operations to our
long-term strategic decisions, ensuring we deliver an essential service
responsibly and collaboratively.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly analytical, curious, and proactive Strategy
Analyst to join our dynamic Strategy & Regulation team. This is an
exciting opportunity to contribute to the long-term vision and strategic
direction of a vital UK energy infrastructure company during a period of
unprecedented change. You will play a key role in conducting in-depth research,
analysing complex data, and generating insights that inform critical business
decisions.
This role offers exposure to a wide range of strategic challenges, from
regulatory developments and technological advancements to market dynamics and
future business models. You will work alongside experienced professionals,
contributing directly to projects that will define SGN's future.
Key Responsibilities:
Market & Industry Analysis:
Conduct in-depth research and analysis of the UK energy markets, with a focus on gas, hydrogen, biomethane and other decarbonisation technologies.
Monitor and analyse key trends, drivers, and emerging opportunities/threats within the broader energy sector, including regulatory changes (e.g., Ofgem RIIO framework, Net Zero targets), technological innovations, and shifts in policy and consumer behaviour.
Assess competitor strategies, industry best practices, and the evolving role of gas distribution networks in a whole-system energy context.
Synthesise complex information into clear, concise, and actionable insights for internal stakeholders.
Strategic Project Support:
Support senior members of the team in the development, refinement, and communication of SGN's long-term strategic plans and objectives.
Contribute to the identification, scoping, and analysis of strategic projects, working closely with various business units (e.g., Operations, Innovation, Commercial, Regulation).
Assist in developing business cases for new projects and investments, including qualitative and quantitative analysis, and initial risk assessment.
Contribute to scenario planning and long-term modelling to understand potential future states of the energy system and SGN's role within them.
Data Analysis & Modelling:
Collect, clean, interpret, and analyse large and diverse datasets to derive meaningful insights and support strategic recommendations.
Develop and maintain analytical models (e.g., financial, operational, market projections).
Utilise business intelligence tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI) to visualise data and communicate findings effectively to non-technical audiences.
Research & Intelligence Gathering:
Proactively identify and source relevant information from industry reports, academic research, regulatory documents, and stakeholder consultations.
Maintain a robust knowledge base of relevant policy, regulatory, and technological developments.
Communication & Collaboration:
Prepare high-quality presentations, reports, and briefing notes for various internal stakeholders, including senior management.
Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to gather information, test hypotheses, and ensure alignment on strategic initiatives.
Present findings and recommendations clearly and persuasively, adapting communication style to the audience.
Required Skills and Experience:
Experience:
2-5 years of experience in an analytical role within a fast-paced environment, ideally within the energy, utilities, infrastructure, or a related highly regulated sector (e.g., consulting, financial analysis, market research).
Education:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant quantitative discipline such as Economics, Business, Finance, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
Analytical Aptitude:
Demonstrable strong analytical, numerical, and problem-solving skills with a proven ability to interpret complex data and draw sound conclusions.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data manipulation, analysis, and modelling.
Proficiency in creating impactful presentations using Microsoft PowerPoint.
Commercial Acumen:
Emerging understanding of key business drivers and commercial principles within a regulated utility or energy sector.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team and build relationships across departments.
Industry Interest:
A keen interest in the UK energy sector, including gas distribution, the regulatory environment (Ofgem), and the energy transition to Net Zero.
Eagerness to learn about new energy technologies (e.g., hydrogen, biomethane) and their implications for infrastructure.
Not sure you meet every requirement?
Research shows some people – particularly women and those from underrepresented
backgrounds – may hesitate to apply unless they meet every criteria. At SGN,
we value diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
