PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £32,900 - £38,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Studio Directors are a key part of Media Operations in radio, making up a team of highly skilled and creative people working 24/7, 365 days a year at the heart of BBC News and Sport. Studio Directors work closely with editorial teams to provide high quality content on 5 Live, Radio 4 and the World Service.

BBC Media Operations is at the heart of delivering incredible content across all our platforms, for all audiences. As a Studio Director you’ll be working in our radio studios, using your craft audio skills to make producers’ ideas become reality. 

Studio Directors are responsible for mixing live programmes on national and international radio networks, operating mixing desks, routers, and other studio equipment. As well as operational ability you’ll need to be a collaborator with great people skills.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT

•    The Studio Director’s role is like a studio sound engineer, working with mixing desks, audio routers, and other studio equipment
•    Studio Directors also connect to and technically manage on-air contributors, making sure guests are ready on time in the best possible quality
•    The Studio Director team plays a key role in providing technical assistant to editorial colleagues out of the studio too. This can include fault finding, sourcing and editing audio, and recording podcasts
•    Many of our programmes are visualised, so it helps if you’re happy framing cameras and have an eye for the visual as to go with your keen ear
•    Most of our output is live, so you’ll enjoy working to deadlines and pressure of being ready for the “On Air” light

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE – KEY CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

•    Experience of mixing live audio, ideally in radio or live environments
•    Experience of using multi-track audio editing software
•    Knowledge of how dynamics processing, equalisation and other tools can be used to enhance and repair audio
•    Ability to perform in highly challenging and rapidly evolving situations
•    Ability to communicate clearly and concisely under pressure, and work to tight, absolute deadlines

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

•    Experience of working in a live broadcast environment
•    Knowledge of equipment used in a broadcast transmission chain
•    Understanding of the BBC Editorial Policy
•    Understanding of how visualised radio is produced and the challenges it creates
