Job Description - Study Support Assistant

ICMP (The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance) is a leading UK music school with campuses in London and in 2025 opening in Liverpool and Leeds. ICMP delivers innovative undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including specialisations in Electronic Music Production, Live Event Management, and Music Marketing. 

About the Role

The role is to support the student in adapting to the academic demands of Higher Education, providing information, helping with time-keeping, helping with organisational skills, social interaction, prioritising workload and understanding ambiguous terminology or instructions. The role of a Study Assistant may include supporting a student with note-taking and/or during examinations if required. May be required to act as a sighted guide and provide navigation support during enrolment activities, induction and Freshers’ Week.

Key Responsibilities

✅ Provide regular contact for a student to monitor and address any developing anxiety-causing situations as they arise, helping to avoid escalation.

✅ Liaise with the student to help them to work in an appropriate way. This might include support with planning and organising time and workload or prompting students regarding appointments or activities which require attention.

✅ Provide support during key periods of transition and/or source information on the student’s behalf if they become overwhelmed by the busy environment within ICMP.

✅ Address any issues that may arise (this may be in person, by Teams, phone or email).

✅ Encourage student to regularly interact with peers.

✅ Maintain open and regular communication with the student’s Disability Adviser, Mental Health Adviser, Specialist Mentor and/or Specialist Study Skills Tutor as appropriate.

✅ Communicate with other departmental staff if necessary (Facilities, IT, etc) paying close attention to confidentiality requirements.

✅ Gradually reduce and withdraw support as the student becomes increasingly integrated whilst keeping lines of communication open.

✅ Maintain accurate records of support and ensure student verification of contact hours.

General duties

✅ Undertaking Staff Development and training as required to fulfil these roles.

✅ The post-holder will show an awareness of, and compliance with, all policies and procedures, but particularly those relating to Disability, Health & Safety, Data Protection, Equality & Diversity and Safeguarding.

✅ Any other duty commensurate with the grading of the role.
