Job Description - Supervising Editor North America (m/f/d)

The European Pressphoto Agency (EPA Images), a global provider of news images, is hiring a full-time multimedia Supervising Editor for the Americas to oversee our regional editorial operation in coordination with the management in Frankfurt, Germany.

In your role,  you will contribute to the expansion of EPA Images, a company founded by leading European news agencies 40 years ago that has a team of 150+ visual journalists and editors spread across the globe. Photography is the core of our business, which then expanded to video ten years ago. We are currently building on that with new multimedia capabilities and products.

Your main responsibilities would be:

  • Supervising the workflow in the EPA editorial department to ensure an efficient, high-quality photo and video service in close cooperation with the other Supervising Editors and the Managing Editors, under the guidance of the Editor in Chief
  • Assisting editors and photo/videographers in decision processes and quality control issues.
  • Participating in the editing process when necessary, particularly during breaking news and special coverage production.
  • Selecting and prioritizing subjects and images, researching, writing or improving headlines and captions and processing of images.
  • Reacting on breaking news and news developments, initiating coverage and/or file illustration, image and handout procurement.
  • Following up on flaws including the execution of corrections or picture kills, under the instructions of the Editor in Chief.
  • Cooperating with the team in charge of Social Media channels and website updates.
  • Giving feedback on coverages in a team-oriented, constructive way.
  • Ensuring compliance with EPA’s policies, style and quality standards.
  • Ensuring a constant optimization and development of the general editorial operation in coordination with the Managing Editors under the guidance of the Editor in Chief.
  • Participating in the overnight on-call rotation
  • Implement any other editorial task assigned by the Editor in Chief including special projects
Meaningful experience as a news photographer, videographer and/or editor yourself, ideally with international coverage and team management background, would be greatly beneficial for this role. We at EPA Images are committed to diversity and encourage applicants from underrepresented communities to apply for the role if they think their own experience relates to our requirements:

  • Ideally a degree in journalism, photography, videography, communication, or similar
  • Significant experience in news coverage on the field and/or editing images. Video editing skills are a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Media and Editorial business
  • Native English, proficiency in Spanish
  • Excellent news sense and continuous knowledge of current events
  • Exceptional ability in editing and copywriting
  • Team spirit and team leading, training and motivation skills
  • Good computer skills (Photoshop, MS Office, Excel, etc.)
  • Strong organization and communication skills
  • Willingness to learn new skills such as video editing and others as required by the Company’s business development
  • Flexibility and readiness to work in shifts, incl. night shift and weekends, holidays, and to take over on call duty.
  • We are one of the leading news, sport and entertainment visual content providers, our brand being globally recognized
  • We value diversity, inclusiveness, and offer a great multinational work environment
  • The position is for our Washington Bureau, but we are open to a discussion around this
  • Health insurance, 401k plan, very good vacation entitlement and a fair salary
