We're looking for a Calibration & Laboratory Equipment Technician to join our growing laboratory team. This is an excellent opportunity for either:

  • An engineering graduate with strong analytical skills and experience working with laboratory equipment and calculations; or
  • An experienced calibration, quality or laboratory professional looking to further develop their technical expertise within an accredited testing environment.

If you enjoy problem-solving, working with precision equipment, and being at the heart of laboratory operations, we'd love to hear from you.

Responsibilities

As a key member of the laboratory team, you'll help ensure our equipment, systems and processes meet the highest standards of accuracy, quality and compliance.

Key responsibilities include:

Calibration & Equipment Management

  • Manage the laboratory calibration schedule and equipment database.
  • Perform internal calibrations and coordinate external calibration activities.
  • Review calibration results, certificates and measurement data.
  • Maintain measurement uncertainty budgets and equipment records.
  • Ensure equipment meets relevant test standards and accreditation requirements.

Laboratory Process Improvement

  • Support improvements to laboratory equipment, test setups and processes.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, new instrumentation and increased efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot, repair and modify laboratory equipment and test fixtures.
  • Assist with the installation, validation and commissioning of new systems and equipment.

Data & Documentation

  • Record and analyse laboratory data, measurements and calibration results.
  • Prepare and maintain calibration procedures, validation records and technical documentation.
  • Support equipment verification and validation activities.
  • Maintain accurate records to support laboratory operations and accreditation.

Training & Continuous Improvement

  • Share technical knowledge and support colleagues in the use of laboratory equipment.
  • Participate in UKAS measurement and calibration training.
  • Contribute to laboratory improvement initiatives and non-testing projects.
  • Proactively identify and implement solutions to improve quality, efficiency and reliability.

Calibration Standards & Compliance

  • Support compliance with ISO 17025, UKAS and relevant industry standards.
  • Define calibration requirements, measurement ranges and acceptance criteria.
  • Verify and approve calibration certificates from external providers.
  • Support internal and external audits and help resolve non-conformances.
  • Ensure laboratory systems, equipment and processes remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.

This role offers a rewarding mix of hands-on laboratory work and office-based technical activities, with opportunities to develop specialist expertise in measurements, calibration and accredited testing.

Qualifications

We're open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including engineering, calibration, laboratory testing and quality assurance.  We'd expect a degree in a relevant subject, or professional qualifications as a technician through an acknowledged organisation.

You may have:

  • An Engineering degree or relevant technical qualification
  • Experience in calibration, quality engineering, laboratory testing or instrumentation
  • Knowledge of measurement principles and calibration processes
  • Experience working within, or understanding of, an ISO 17025 accredited environment
  • Experience using test equipment, instrumentation or laboratory systems
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to work
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with internal teams and external suppliers
  • Additional experience with measurement uncertainty, validation activities, automation systems or laboratory equipment management would be advantageous.
