What's it like to work at the British Council as a Teacher?
Role Description and Accountabilities
Join the British Council and play a key role in providing learners with a rewarding, engaging and stimulating English language learning experience. As a Teacher of English, you will contribute to our global English strategy by delivering teaching to the highest standards of English Language Teaching (ELT), supporting effective learning outcomes, and strengthening the British Council's reputation as a world authority in English language education.
In this role, you will plan, prepare and deliver high-quality English lessons for a range of learner groups, adapting your approach to different learning needs and learning styles. You will ensure teaching consistently meets British Council Global Teaching Standards, while monitoring learner progress and providing regular feedback to support achievement, independence and continuous improvement. You will actively participate in professional development and performance management activities, helping maintain excellence in teaching and staying at the forefront of best practice in ELT.
You will also contribute to the wider success of the teaching centre by supporting operational activities and organisational initiatives. This includes attending staff meetings, collaborating with colleagues to develop and improve courses, materials and services, and ensuring programmes continue to meet learners' needs. You will support local marketing and promotional activities, contribute to excellent customer service through effective communication with students, and complete teaching-related administrative tasks to agreed standards while demonstrating British Council values and behaviours.
Building positive relationships with learners, customers and colleagues will be central to your success. You will help learners understand the British Council's cultural relations role by creating opportunities to engage with UK culture, values and intercultural experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
To be successful, you will hold a recognised TEFL-I qualification such as CELTA, Trinity CertTESOL or an equivalent qualification, with experience teaching English to a range of age groups and proficiency levels. A degree or equivalent qualification is desirable. You will have a strong understanding of communicative language teaching methodologies, excellent classroom management and communication skills, and the ability to create engaging learning experiences that meet diverse learner needs. You will be organised, adaptable, customer-focused and committed to ongoing professional development, while working collaboratively as part of a teaching team.
A commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion, data protection, special educational needs and disability, and health and safety is essential. You will always uphold British Council values and behaviours, ensuring a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for learners and colleagues alike.
