Job Description - Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship

Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship at St John's Primary School



We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant Apprentice to join our dedicated team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone passionate about supporting children’s learning, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).



The successful candidate will support children with SEND needs within a classroom context — not necessarily in a 1:1 capacity, but primarily working with small groups of children to help them engage and progress in their learning. This role offers valuable experience for those looking to begin a career in education, with full training provided including phonics, early maths teaching, and classroom support strategies.



Apprenticeship Overview:




  • Salary: £7.55 an hour, Automatic pay increase after one year on programme for 19+ year olds

  • Working week: Monday to Friday 8:35am till 3:15pm with a 25-minute lunch break (Timings are non-negotiable)

  • Hours: 31.25 hours per week

  • Duration: 18 months

  • Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard qualification

  • Online training supported by our dedicated tutor

  • Location: Victoria Road, Knaphill, Woking, Surrey, GU21 2AS

  • September Start!!



Main Duties & Responsibilities:





  • Support the academic, social, and emotional development of children within the classroom.

  • Assist small groups of pupils, including those with SEND, to access learning and reach their full potential.

  • Deliver planned intervention programmes under the guidance of the class teacher or SENCO.

  • Provide care and support for pupils with physical, medical, emotional or educational needs.

  • Engage actively in lessons, helping to move children’s learning forward.

  • Supervise children during playtimes and lunchtimes, promoting positive behaviour and safety.

  • Support in maintaining an organised and inclusive classroom environment.

  • Help implement individual education plans and behaviour support strategies.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential records as required.

  • Attend and participate in training and professional development opportunities.

  • Uphold the school’s policies and contribute to its positive and supportive ethos.



Person Specification


Essential Skills & Attributes:




  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Good numeracy skills to support learning across the primary curriculum

  • Basic IT proficiency (e.g., Microsoft Office)

  • Able to follow instructions and use initiative

  • Organised, with the ability to plan and prioritise tasks

  • Patient, nurturing, and committed to children’s development

  • Enthusiastic and hardworking

  • Reliable, punctual, and trustworthy

  • Able to work well within a team and independently

  • Committed to safeguarding and maintaining confidentiality



What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?



The successful candidate will obtain a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard qualification.

Each apprentice will have their own dedicated tutor who will conduct monthly remote tutorials and reviews, providing continuous support throughout the apprenticeship program. Depending on the apprentice’s needs, the frequency of these sessions may vary. 



What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?



Potential full-time employment for the right candidate upon successful completion of the apprenticeship. 



Pre-employment checks. Please be aware that upon a successful offer of employment, the company completes digitalised right-to-work checks and DBS applications via an external provider - 'Matrix Screening'. The company also completes an internal online social media search, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance.
