Barnet Council is seeking a motivated and experienced Team Leader – Health and Safety to join our ambitious Environmental Health & Public Protection team.

Working within one of London's largest and most diverse boroughs, you will lead the delivery of health and safety enforcement activities across a wide range of businesses and workplaces whilst supporting and developing a dedicated team of officers.

About the Service

Environmental Health & Public Protection sits within the Assurance and Public Protection Directorate and delivers a wide range of regulatory services that help create safer, healthier and more prosperous communities. 

Our Health and Safety Team plays a vital role in protecting workers, residents and visitors through:

• Health and safety inspections and interventions
• Accident and incident investigations
• Complaint investigation and business engagement
• Enforcement and compliance activity
• Partnership working with key agencies and stakeholders
• Advice, guidance and support for businesses
• Service improvement and public protection initiatives

Working within this team offers exposure to a diverse range of regulatory challenges alongside opportunities to influence service delivery and develop professionally.

About the Role

As Team Leader – Health and Safety, you will be responsible for leading and developing the Council's health and safety service, ensuring the effective delivery of statutory functions and high-quality regulatory outcomes.

You will manage a small team of professional officers, oversee complex investigations and enforcement activities, and help shape service priorities and improvement initiatives.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced practitioner looking to combine operational expertise with leadership responsibilities in a challenging and rewarding role.

What You'll Be Doing

• Lead and oversee the Council's health and safety enforcement functions.
• Manage, support and develop a small team of officers.
• Carry out and oversee inspections, investigations and interventions.
• Investigate workplace accidents, complaints and serious incidents.
• Take proportionate and effective enforcement action where required.
• Provide advice and guidance to businesses, duty holders and stakeholders.
• Work collaboratively with internal and external partners.
• Contribute to service improvement projects, policies and operational best practice.
• Ensure the service meets statutory obligations and performance objectives.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for a motivated and professional leader who is passionate about protecting people, supporting businesses and delivering excellent regulatory outcomes.

You will have:

• A recognised Environmental Health qualification or equivalent health and safety qualification.
• Significant experience delivering health and safety enforcement within a local authority or regulatory environment.
• Strong knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and enforcement practice.
• Experience of managing, supervising or mentoring staff.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills.
• Strong investigative and report-writing abilities.
• Sound judgement and the ability to make balanced, evidence-based decisions.
• A commitment to high-quality, customer-focused public services.
