Technical Author / Contract Editor - Major Water Infrastructure Programme
Contract Length: 12-month rolling contract. Location: Hybrid working - 2 days per week in Kings Cross, London or Peterborough. Rate: £400-£500 per day
About the Opportunity
We are supporting a major UK water infrastructure programme seeking an experienced Technical Author / Contract Editor to support the development of critical contract, procurement and technical documentation across a portfolio of nationally significant capital projects.
This role will play a key part in ensuring complex technical, commercial and contractual information is translated into clear, consistent and high-quality documentation. Working closely with engineering, procurement, commercial and legal stakeholders, you will be responsible for producing, reviewing and maintaining documentation that supports the successful procurement and delivery of major infrastructure works.
This opportunity would suit an experienced Technical Author, Contract Editor, Technical Writer or Bid Documentation Specialist who enjoys working with complex information and has a keen eye for detail, structure and consistency.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare, edit and maintain high-quality contract and procurement documentation for major infrastructure projects. Review technical, commercial and procurement documents to ensure consistency, accuracy and clarity. Support the development of NEC4-based contract documentation, scopes of work, technical specifications and procurement packages. Work closely with subject matter experts to translate complex engineering and commercial requirements into clear, structured documentation. Ensure contractual requirements, deliverables and performance criteria are accurately defined and measurable. Develop document templates, standards and style guides to improve consistency across the programme. Support tender preparation activities, including document reviews, quality assurance checks and submission support. Edit and proofread contract documents, technical reports, procurement submissions and stakeholder communications. Manage document control and version management processes, ensuring compliance with programme governance requirements. Support responses to tender queries and clarification requests during procurement activities. Liaise with commercial, legal, engineering and delivery teams to ensure document quality and contractual accuracy.
Key Skills & Experience
Proven experience as a Technical Author, Contract Editor, Technical Writer or Documentation Specialist. Experience working within infrastructure, utilities, engineering, construction, transportation, energy or water sector environments. Strong experience developing, reviewing and editing contractual, procurement or technical documentation. Understanding of NEC4 contracts and major project procurement processes. Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to simplify and structure complex information clearly. Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to document quality. Experience reviewing technical specifications, scopes of work and contractual requirements. Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, commercial teams, procurement professionals and legal advisors. Experience managing document control, document management systems and version control processes. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and common document management platforms.
Desirable Experience
Major infrastructure, utilities or capital project environments. Public sector or regulated utility programmes. Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and collaborative delivery models. Bid documentation, procurement support or tender management activities. Knowledge of engineering, construction or water industry terminology. Experience developing technical standards, templates and document governance processes.
