Location: Newcastle upon Tyne, Nexus control room Contract: Temporary, Contract Hours: Full-time, 3 x 12-hour shifts on a 24/7 rotation Salary: £32,000 plus 20% shift allowance Start date: ASAP
Role Overview
We are looking for a Technical Support Technician (Rail Operations) to join a busy rail operations environment. This role is based in a control room setting and will focus on supporting live train operations by advising on, diagnosing and responding to in-service faults and failed units.
The successful candidate will work closely with production teams, drivers and operational stakeholders to ensure trains are safely and reliably available for service. This is a great opportunity for someone with a rail, depot, automotive or military technical background who is looking to develop within rolling stock.
Key Responsibilities
Log and respond to notifications of in-service faults and failed units. Provide technical advice and first-response support during live train faults and breakdowns. Support the safe entry, withdrawal and mobilisation of units in service. Liaise with production management and operational stakeholders where on-site support is required. Assist with fault diagnosis across key train systems including electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, software, network, high-voltage and low-voltage systems. Maintain accurate records, including defect logs, job cards, work orders, failure reports and technical requests. Input and analyse operational and maintenance data using electronic management systems. Support safety, quality and environmental standards, helping to embed a zero-harm culture. Attend internal and external performance meetings where required. Support continuous improvement activity and contribute to safe, reliable and efficient production performance.
Essential Requirements
Qualification or equivalent experience in a rail, depot, technical, automotive or military environment. NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a relevant technical subject. Electrical, mechanical, network/software or similar technical experience. Strong communication skills and confidence supporting stakeholders in live situations. Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and electronic reporting systems. Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines. Customer-focused approach with a commitment to quality and safety. Flexible team player with good interpersonal skills. Willingness to work a 24/7 shift rotation. Full UK driving licence. Medically fit and willing to undertake drugs and alcohol testing where required.
Desirable Experience
Experience working with rolling stock or in an operational transport environment. Knowledge of rail safety, risk assessments and safe systems of work. Experience contributing to root cause investigations. Understanding of Lean, Kaizen, 6S or other continuous improvement methods. NVQ Level 4 or ILM Level 3 Leadership and Management, or equivalent.
Candidate Profile
This role would suit a technically minded individual with strong communication skills who can remain calm under pressure. Candidates from rail, depot, automotive or military backgrounds may be well suited, particularly those looking to move into or develop within rolling stock and live operational support.
