Job Description - Trainee Estimator - Sheet Metal

ADS Laser Cutting is the premier metal laser cutting, folding, fabrication, finishing and assembly company in the UK. Due to continued growth we are seeking a highly motivated Trainee Estimator. 



Role Profile: The Trainee Estimator is an entry level role designed to support the development of skills and knowledge in all areas of the estimating process within a sheet metal fabrication and welding environment. The successful candidate will be given structured training and mentorship to gradually take on more responsibility in preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates. This role offers a clear pathway into a full estimator role and a long term career in manufacturing cost estimation. Working under the guidance of experienced estimators and other team members, the trainee will gain exposure to engineering drawings, materials estimation, supplier coordination, and estimating software. A proactive and committed approach to learning is essential.



Key Responsibilities:



  • Under supervision, assist in preparing detailed cost estimates for sheet metal fabrication and welding projects

  • using company estimating software and pricing guidelines.

  • Learn how to communicate with customers regarding project requirements and document all interactions

  • accurately.

  • Support the calculation of material quantities and labour needs based on engineering drawings and technical

  • specifications.

  • In the absence of the quotation coordinator, and once trained, assist in managing the estimating inbox,

  • allocating quote requests, and helping prioritise workload under supervision.

  • Assist with supplier and subcontractor quotation requests and develop an understanding of how to evaluate

  • pricing and lead times.

  • Help prepare competitive and complete bids for submission to clients.

  • Organise and maintain records of estimates, supplier quotes, and project communications.

  • Collaborate with senior estimators, sales, and operations to support project viability and profitability.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating tools and processes.

  • Carry out any other duties as assigned to support the estimating team and company goal



Skills, Experience & Personal Attributes:



  • Basic understanding of engineering or manufacturing principles.

  • Willingness to learn how to read and interpret engineering drawings.

  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem solving skills.

  • Self-motivated with a proactive attitude and desire to take ownership of learning.

  • Proficient in computer usage, including estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Professional, courteous, and acts with integrity and honesty.

  • Positive attitude towards innovation and change.

  • Looking to build a career in a fast-growing business.
