Job Description - Trainee Maths Teacher Salaried

Trainee Maths Teacher (Salaried)

Want to train as a Maths teacher without going back to university full-time? This salaried route lets you earn while you gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), with a full timetable, a structured programme, and strong support throughout.

*** Trainee Maths Teacher (Salaried)
*** Permanent – September 2025
*** £21,000 - £23,000 annum
*** Location: Central Birmingham
*** Get paid whilst you train, become a qualified Maths Teacher

The Role
You’ll be based in a Central Birmingham secondary school from September, learning on the job. The course starts with observation and gradually builds up—supporting small groups, then co-teaching, then leading full lessons across KS3 and KS4. You’ll work with experienced Maths teachers daily, learning how to break down abstract concepts like algebra, ratios, or quadratic equations and deliver them in a way that clicks for pupils.

You’ll plan and deliver lessons, track pupil progress, and mark work with a focus on both challenge and support. You’ll be trained in how to stretch higher ability pupils and scaffold learning for those who find Maths more difficult. Managing behaviour, creating a calm learning environment, and building your classroom presence will be key parts of your development.

You’ll also receive structured weekly feedback from a subject mentor—someone who knows what it takes to succeed in the classroom and will coach you through it. There’s regular training outside the classroom too, so you build up your pedagogy, understand the curriculum, and meet the national teaching standards. Depending on your placement, there may also be opportunities to gain experience with KS5 (A-Level Maths or Core Maths).

The Candidate
You’ll need a strong Maths background—ideally a degree in Maths or a related subject like Engineering, Physics or Economics. You must have a real interest in education, be confident in your subject, and ready for the demands of school life. Previous experience working with young people helps but isn’t essential.

The School
This is a high-performing Birmingham school with a track record of developing excellent teachers. It offers a well-structured School Direct programme, experienced mentors, and a Maths department that knows how to support trainees. You’ll feel part of the staff team from day one, with access to training across the trust and the chance to secure a permanent post after qualifying.

If you want to teach and earn from day one—and you’ve got the subject knowledge and commitment—this is the route for you.
