Underwriter - SME Finance

Job DescriptionWe’re looking for an experienced underwriter to join the team, and help us through our next phase of growth.The ideal candidate has strong practical experience in underwriting within the UK, preferably in unsecured business finance. They will have the ability to make good, yet quick credit decisions on SME business loans. Our GEMS are the backbone of everything we do at mcl finance… Come join the team!What You'll be doingmcl finance is hiring an Underwriter to join our underwriting team; whilst working closely with our collections teams to make better credit decisions for the lenders we service.You will be responsible for:Managing incoming credit applications – analysing data from financial statements, credit reference agencies, application forms and other third party sources to arrive at fast, fair, and accurate credit decisions.Analysing credit applications in line with credit risk policies from the lenders we work with. Ensuring applications are completed within agreed SLA’s and managing escalations as necessary.Reviewing provided documents and data for accuracy, spot unusual or fraudulent behaviour.Confident decision making with Adverse Media, PEPS, Sanctions and SOW/SOF.Communicating effectively with our Account Management teams to ensure customer needs are met at all times.Assisting other credit underwriters in their credit decisions, and coach and support to encourage their development and growth.Be actively involved in improving the decision making framework, through developments to our systems and processes.Working closely with the Tech and Analytics team to improve systems and our scorecard to enable us to make better, faster and fairer decisions.Requirements & SkillsWe look for people that are smart, humble, motivated and who are always looking to improve. Ideally, you’ll have:2+ years experience in commercial loan underwriting, credit sanctioning or credit analysis, preferably within the SME sector or alternative lending.A good understanding of how businesses operate, including their main risk and revenue drivers.Ability to interpret financial statements and an understanding of the key risk drivers specific to SMEs.An analytical mindset with a practical approach to problem solving.Ability to work under pressure and prioritise.Attention to detail and accuracy.Excellent communication skills. Efficient and proactive attitude.Ability to come up with innovative and scalable solutions to day-to-day problems and suggest changes to processes to improve our efficiency.Why join us?We put politics aside and make complex decisions - fast.
