Vice President of Business Development

 Join Howard Shockey & Sons, a trusted leader in commercial construction with a long-standing reputation for quality, integrity, and innovation. The Vice President of Business Development is a senior leadership role responsible for setting the strategic direction, structure, and performance expectations of the Business Development and Marketing departments. The individual in this role leads the team that creates awareness, generates qualified construction opportunities, cultivates key industry relationships, responds to all requests for qualifications, bids, and/or proposals, and assures the company's growth targets are achieved across all identified sectors. Reporting directly to the President, the VP is employed by Shockey Management Company and is accountable for team leadership, pipeline health, revenue generation, and brand positioning in the marketplace. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor all members of the business development and marketing teams
• Develop and execute the company’s go-to-market strategy across sectors and geographies
• Work with senior leadership to set revenue targets, KPIs, and departmental goals aligned with overall business strategy
• Serve as a high-level relationship builder with key clients, developers, architects, and strategic partners
• Oversee all prospecting, lead generation, and pursuit strategies, working with senior leadership to ensure strong alignment with internal operations
• Guide development of responses, proposals, interviews, and client presentations for all pursuits
• Evaluate market trends and lead internal discussions to shift focus, resources, or sectors as needed
• Maintain a company-wide business development dashboard with real-time pipeline visibility
• Maintain an understanding of broad economic indicators and commodity pricing influencing construction costs and material availability
• Collaborate closely with estimating, preconstruction, and operations leadership to ensure a seamless handoff from pursuit to delivery
• Champion the Shockey brand at industry events, speaking engagements, and other community events
• Lead hiring, onboarding, and ongoing development of business development and marketing talent
• Coordinate with outside vendors providing consulting, design, website maintenance, and other services
• Oversee annual planning and budgeting for business development and marketing initiatives
• Identify and engage new subcontractors and suppliers throughout the region served, and conveys information to estimating and operations
• Review, negotiate to acceptability, and execute all owner agreements on behalf of the company
• Work closely with the President to resolve those operational conflicts that rise beyond the ability of front-line personnel
• Perform other reasonable duties at the request of ownership or the President

 Education and/or Experience 

•  Bachelor's degree in business, construction management, marketing, or related field (MBA preferred)
• 10+ years of progressive experience in construction business development, including 3–5 years leading teams

• Deep industry knowledge of design-build, CMAR, and general contracting delivery methods
• Proven ability to drive strategy, lead people, and close significant work
• Exceptional leadership, coaching, and communication skills
• Experience managing large pursuits and coordinating cross-functional teams
• Proficient in CRM systems and business intelligence tools
• Willingness to travel within all regions served.  

 Certificates, Licenses, Registrations 

• Possess a valid driver's license.
