Position Summary

The Country Medical Director, UK & Ireland, will take overall accountability for Medical governance and all Medical Department activities in the country through alignment with the local operating company (LOC) General Manager (GM), partnership with other key LOC functions and leadership and development of the LOC Medical team.

You will ensure that HCPs (and patients where appropriate) have the correct information to allow evidence-based use of GSK products, through, for example, educational programs and scientific/external engagement activities, as well as ensuring these are in line with GSK standards and values and are therefore in the best interests of the patient.

You will also provide appropriate input into the development, registration and launch of new medicines and vaccines, and the development and execution of Medical Affairs strategies and plans that are aligned with the business strategies for commercialization of medicines of value to our patients and customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate strong Medical leadership and accountability for overall Medical governance within the UK and Ireland LOCs, and the management of all the Medical functions.
  • Lead the Medical Department in the provision of high-quality Medical and Scientific strategic input and insights to the Pharma and Vaccine businesses (at local and global level if needed), and ensure successful execution of the Medical Plans to the desired outcomes and timelines.
  • Embed the principles and practices of Scientific Engagement (SE) within the organisation and drive the conceptualization and implementation of SE activities such as advisory boards and medical education programs. This includes Medical leadership in appropriate external engagement with key external experts, investigators, academia, government officials, media and other stakeholders under the respective governance frameworks, in order to develop, maintain, and enhance our reputation and trust with external stakeholders.
  • Lead the UK Medical Governance Executive Board, to actively contribute to the UK RMCB, and local crisis management committee, to ensure that the highest standards of Medical Governance are practised within the UK and Ireland LOCs across all functions and businesses. This also includes ensuring appropriate management and deployment of local Medical resources and capabilities (in collaboration with the GMs) in order to adequately meet local governance expectations and internal/external standards.
  • Governance of specific functions – Ensure that appropriate processes are in place to meet the required standards while responding to Medical Information requests from local HCPs and customers. And ensure maintenance of an effective local Pharmacovigilance system and processes, to comply with local regulations and GSK global PV requirements.
  • Provide Medical leadership, input, and guidance into local HTA submissions and publications. This includes leadership and governance oversight of Health Economics and Outcomes Research for local market access purposes, in partnership with other central functions such as Projects, Clinical Platforms & Sciences (PCPS) and Global Health Outcomes (GHO).
  • Where the UK or Ireland is represented on the Franchise Board(s) – Collaborate closely with and provide medical strategic input and stakeholder insights into the franchise(s) to maintain and leverage effective participation to ensure that LOC business needs are adequately reflected in the medicine development plans. Where the UK and Ireland are not directly represented on the Franchise Board – Collaborate closely with franchise Area Medical Leads to provide medical strategic inputs to ensure LOC business needs are adequately communicated to the franchise board.
  • Ensure the appropriate medical governance oversight and risk management for all Clinical studies conducted in the country, and that subjects and patients are not placed at unnecessary risk from their participation. For studies operated through local Clinical Operations, ensure that there is a focus on quality (in compliance with local regulations, GCP Guidelines and internal SOPs) and performance.
  • Foster a leadership culture that attracts and retains high-potential and high-performance personnel, develops them within the country organisation and actively helps them to secure opportunities in the wider organisation as appropriate. Ensure that there is an effective succession planning process in place for all key Medical roles in the LOC.

Candidate Profile, Qualifications & Expertise

  • Medical degree and GMC registered physician.
  • Experience in medical affairs leadership roles at local (in country) and global (above country) level
  • Previous experience as a UK Country Medical Director.
  • Experience of leading large teams (over 50 people)
  • Experience of a mix of Therapeutic Areas including specialty care, oncology and primary care.
  • Experience of launching assets in the UK.
  • Experience of asset lifecycle managment.
  • Experience of the UK healthcare system
  • Experience of working closely with clinical development and commercial teams.
  • Experience of quality assurance, quality improvement and risk management related to medical affairs.
