This is a fixed, site-based leadership role in Cardiff, responsible for managing a team of technicians and ensuring the reliability, availability and cost-effective maintenance of a diverse fleet of heavy plant and machinery.
The successful candidate will have strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic skills, extensive workshop management experience, and a proven track record in preventive maintenance planning, cost control and technical problem-solving.
Key Responsibilities
Manage and lead the workshop team, ensuring a safe, productive and professional working environment. Plan, schedule and deliver all preventative maintenance activities based on machine operating hours and manufacturer recommendations. Prioritise and coordinate breakdown repairs to minimise equipment downtime. Allocate work effectively and monitor workshop productivity and performance. Develop and maintain maintenance schedules, service plans and inspection programmes. Manage supplier relationships, obtain quotations and source parts and services cost-effectively. Oversee parts purchasing and inventory control. Conduct maintenance cost analysis and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and cost savings. Manage and continuously improve the company's oil sampling and condition monitoring programme. Liaise with operations teams to ensure machinery availability meets business requirements. Supervise external contractors and specialist repair providers. Investigate equipment failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Support continuous improvement projects across maintenance operations. Ensure compliance with all health, safety and environmental requirements. Deliver training, mentoring and technical support to workshop personnel.Skills & Experience Required Essential
Minimum 5 years' experience managing a busy plant or heavy equipment workshop. NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Plant Maintenance, Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, Engineering or related discipline. Strong experience with heavy mobile and fixed plant equipment. Advanced fault-finding and diagnostic capabilities across: Mechanical systems Hydraulic systems Electrical systems Engine management systems Experience using OEM diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting tools. Proven experience in maintenance planning and fleet management. Strong understanding of maintenance KPIs, cost management and budgeting. Excellent organisational and leadership skills. Full UK Driving Licence. Competent user of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook and Teams).Highly Desirable
