Job Description - Yard Manager - Builders Merchant

We are looking for an experienced and highly organised Yard Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the yard at our clients’ busy builders merchant branch.

You will be responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and customer-focused handling of building materials and goods in and out of the yard. This role involves leading a team of yard operatives, maintaining stock accuracy, ensuring health and safety compliance and delivering excellent service to our trade and retail customers.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage the yard team to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
Oversee the receipt, storage and dispatch of building materials.
Maintain accurate stock records and carry out regular stock checks.
Ensure all health and safety regulations are followed at all times.
Maintain a clean, safe and organised yard environment.
Operate forklifts.
Provide outstanding customer service by assisting customers in the yard and loading materials safely.
Coordinate deliveries and collections with the transport team.
Monitor staff performance and provide coaching and training where needed.
Liaise with suppliers and internal departments to resolve delivery or stock issues.

Requirements:

Proven experience in a similar role, ideally in a builders merchant environment.
Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a team effectively.
Excellent organisational and communication abilities.
Knowledge of building materials and industry products is highly desirable.
Valid forklift license
Strong focus on health and safety compliance.
