Youth Support Worker - SEMH School, Wandsworth

We are looking for a dedicated and resilient Youth Support Worker to join a specialist SEMH school in Wandsworth. This rewarding role involves supporting secondary-aged students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them overcome barriers to learning and thrive both in and out of the classroom.

The successful candidate will have a passion for working with young people, strong behavioural management skills, and the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with students who may have experienced challenges in their education and personal lives.

Key Responsibilities

Support students with SEMH needs on a 1:1 basis and in small groups.
Build strong, supportive relationships that promote trust, engagement and personal growth.
Help students develop emotional regulation, resilience and social skills.
Manage challenging behaviour using positive behaviour management strategies.
Support pupils both inside and outside the classroom to encourage learning and participation.
Act as a positive role model, mentor and advocate for young people.
Work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external agencies to support student progress and wellbeing.
Promote a safe, nurturing and inclusive school environment.

Requirements

Previous experience working with young people is essential.
Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH needs is desirable.
Confident in managing challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Patient, empathetic and resilient approach.
Background in youth work, support work, mentoring, care, sports coaching or education is highly beneficial.
