Security Engineer
Salary: From £35,000 per annum negotiable depending on experience
Contract: Permanent

The security team at Jisc protects UK Education and Research against a wide range of cyber security threats, supporting our members and customers in improving their digital resilience. By fostering collaboration and continuous improvement, we are committed to building a comprehensive security solution that empowers institutions to defend against evolving cyber threats. We are actively developing our Security operation centre (SOC) services which includes a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) services, 24x7 security event monitoring and endpoint detection and response services. About the role:
We provide the Janet Network - the UK’s National research and education network. It is used by 18 million people and has built in, world-class cyber security protection. You will be joining our cyber security division at an exciting time of growth and change, taking responsibility for developing and maintaining the infrastructure and systems that support Jisc’s security services and teams enabling the security of Jisc’s Janet network. We are looking for someone who has previous operational experience working in a relevant technical subject area or operational experience providing or supporting front line network services. Due to the breadth of requirements for our existing and future services, we are looking for candidates with skills in any of a number of different areas, including Splunk, Automation, Cloud Services, Networking, Ansible, AWS, Google Workspace and Azure / Microsoft 365. Responsibilities will include:
• Maintenance and development of platforms and applications supporting the Cyber Security Threat Monitoring platform, and the work of the cyber security division, including patching and monitoring.
• Liaise with member organisations and assist in the implementation of infrastructure and configuration across customer environments for Cyber Security Threat Monitoring.
• Work with the security engineering group to continue improving the security, efficiency, responsiveness of critical security services and products.
• Liaise with member organisations and assist in the implementation of infrastructure and configuration across customer environments for managed services, specifically log ingestion. Key Skills and Experience:
• Previous experience of engineering SIEM solutions.
• Experience supporting and managing Linux and/or Windows Hosts on physical and virtual infrastructure.
• Understanding of core security concepts such as identity agents, network protocols, DNS, VPN, zero-trust, and certificate management.
• Good organisational, communication, presentational and interpersonal skills.
• Capability to communicate concisely and effectively equally well with fellow engineers, non-technical colleagues and with members and/or customers alike Please refer to the job description for full details. Don’t meet every single requirement?
