Job Description - Lead Developer, Business Intelligence

The role

 

We are seeking an experienced and hands on Lead Business Intelligence Developer, who will be responsible for leading a team of BI developers in designing, developing, and maintaining BI solutions that enable data-driven decision-making within the organisation. You will collaborate with business stakeholders to understand their requirements and translate BI and Data Solutions through BI tools and technologies.

 

You will bring a strong functional and technical understanding of the core Business Intelligence Stack including Databases, Data Modelling (Star Schema), ETL processes, Batch Architectures, Report Solutions, and best practices approaches. You will lead and manage the Business Intelligence team, as well relationships with key business stakeholders and analytics partners across the company. The role is expected to be 60% hands on, and 40% managing the team.

 

This role is offered on a remote basis, with occasional travel to the office in Swansea. This is expected to be once per month.

 

Key responsibilities

 

  • Team Lead / Management
    • Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise to a team of BI Developers
    • Define project goals, timelines and deliverables and ensure that they are met efficiently.
  • Technical Expertise
    • Hands-on development experience using Microsoft BI stack including MS SQL Server, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, Power BI, ADO and TFS.
    • Optimise BI solutions for performance, scalability and usability, ensuring they meet the needs of end users.
    • Monitor the performance of BI solutions and identify areas for optimisation or conduct investigations and diagnostics.
  • Stakeholder Management
    • Work closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and translate them into technical solutions / requirements.
  • Strategy and Planning
    • Provide delivery estimates for development, understanding team capacity to support creation of project timelines and roadmaps for key initiatives.
  • Governance
    • Custodian and manager of analytical data and data warehouse through both internal architecture and data warehouse.

 

 

Qualifications, skills and experience

 

  • Proven experience in developing BI Micro Soft BI stack including MS SQL Server, SSMS, SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, Power BI, ADO, and TFS.
  • Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, ETL processes, batch architecture and data modelling techniques (Star Schema, 3NF).
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience working with relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL).
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in data visualisation and dashboard design, with a focus on usability and user experience.
  • Knowledge of data governance principles and practices, as well as regulatory requirements related to data privacy and security.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and tools (e.g., Jira, Scrum) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of Azure, Python, Data Bricks or Dataiku is a bonus.
