Our Summer Internship Programme gives you the opportunity to gain valuable experience whilst complementing your studies and personal and professional growth. We have an opportunity to intern within our highly respected national Ecology, Ecosystems and Geomorphology (EEG) team. In particular you will work on applying the science of geomorphology to real world issues such as flood risk and climate resilience, and there could be opportunities to work on biosecurity and wider ecosystem health. This could lead to various career pathways across the Environment Agency and kick start your future! You'll be working on challenging and varied projects that really matter and will make a difference. You would be in a role which supports your technical development as well as your professional network. The support you get includes:

The team The team is highly experienced, inclusive, and supportive. They deliver culture change and providing strategic direction across areas relating to Ecology, Ecosystems and Geomorphology. Providing leadership, strategic direction, and technical support for geomorphology, environmental planning, invasive non-native species; biosecurity; ecology; data custodianship and climate change adaptation;. The EEG team sits within Fisheries and Nature within the Environment and Business Directorate. We’re dispersed across the country yet are close-knit and friendly. Experience/skills Required You will be someone with a genuine interest in the environment and be passionate about creating a better place for people and wildlife. You will be flexible in your approach and have determination to make positive change happen. We are looking for applicants with a variety of skills and behaviours, and willingness to develop within new areas. You will be:
  • In your final year of an undergraduate degree or master's degree programme
  • Graduated from an undergraduate degree or master's degree programme within the last 12 months (from June 2023)
  • Studying or have studied a degree, though we are particularly keen to hear from you if you studied within a geography or geomorphology discipline.
You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided. Competence 2 Technical Skills Description This internship may involve learning new skills. How do you approach learning new skills and staying current with advancements in geomorphology? If you are applying from the Civil Service please note that the Environment Agency is not a part of HM Civil Service and you would not be a Crown Servant in the event of being appointed. Therefore, you will not be eligible for continuous service. For applicants who currently work in local government or other bodies listed in the Redundancy Payments (Continuity of Employment in Local Government etc) (Modification) Order 1999, you may be eligible for continuous service for the purpose of calculating any future redundancy payment.
