Multi-Agent AI Systems for Scientific workflows, interaction & efficient Autonomy internship

Cambridge

AI Research Intern – Multi-Agent Systems and Reasoning
Introduction to Role
AstraZeneca is a global, science-led biopharmaceutical business, with innovative medicines used by millions of patients worldwide. Our Summer Internship Programme offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students a unique opportunity to experience the impact of advanced AI within real-world scientific and research environments.
This internship sits within AstraZeneca’s data science and artificial intelligence research ecosystem, where advanced machine learning methods are explored to support complex scientific workflows. The role focuses on emerging multi-agent and agentic AI systems, a rapidly growing area at the intersection of machine learning, reasoning, and autonomous decision-making.
The intern will work alongside experienced AI researchers and engineers to explore how multiple AI agents can interact, reason, and collaborate to support complex tasks relevant to scientific discovery and enterprise workflows. The exact project direction will be shaped closer to the start of the programme, allowing flexibility based on the intern’s background and evolving research priorities.
This role offers exposure to cutting-edge AI research, practical experimentation, and collaborative problem-solving in a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment.

Accountabilities
During the internship, the successful candidate may:
  • Explore and prototype concepts related to multi-agent AI systems, such as agent interaction, coordination, and task decomposition.
  • Investigate reasoning, planning, or decision-making behaviours in agent-based AI systems.
  • Support analysis of efficiency, scalability, or robustness in AI systems involving multiple interacting components.
  • Contribute to exploratory research on topics such as memory mechanisms, uncertainty handling, or lightweight model orchestration, depending on project focus.
  • Assist with designing simple experiments, evaluations, or simulations to understand agent behaviour.
  • Document findings and present insights to technical colleagues at the end of the placement.
The scope will be adjusted to match the intern’s skills and the programme duration.

Essential Criteria
  • Currently undertaking an undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related discipline.
  • Familiarity with machine learning or AI concepts, such as neural networks, optimisation, or algorithmic reasoning.
  • Experience with programming, typically in Python (or similar languages), and basic software development practices.
  • Interest in advanced AI topics such as agent-based systems, reasoning models, or autonomous systems.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Must have the right to work in the UK.
  • Must return to education after the programme ends (students graduating before or during the programme are not eligible).

Desirable Criteria
  • Prior exposure to multi-agent systems, reinforcement learning, or large language models.
  • Experience with research projects, coursework, or open-source contributions related to AI or machine learning.
  • Interest in applying AI to scientific, technical, or real-world problem domains.
AstraZeneca is where you can immerse yourself in groundbreaking work with real patient impact. Trusted to work on meaningful projects, you will be empowered to take on new challenges while receiving the support and guidance needed to succeed. You will join a collaborative, inclusive environment where curiosity, learning, and scientific excellence are valued.
We are committed to building an inclusive and equitable workplace. Applications are welcomed from all qualified candidates, and reasonable adjustments are available throughout the recruitment process.
