Job Description - PhD Internship - Process Modeling & Simulation

We are offering a part-time internship for a PhD student in (Bio)Chemical Engineering or Process Systems Engineering interested in applying their modeling knowledge to pharmaceutical development.

You’ll collaborate with our modeling and platform teams to support the development of simulations and model-driven workflows that enhance decision-making in process development. The internship will expose you to both scientific and practical aspects of deploying models in a digital platform environment.

About PolyModels Hub

PolyModels Hub is transforming pharmaceutical R&D through cutting-edge modeling, simulations, and data integration. Our platform, ModelFlow, empowers scientists to accelerate development timelines, optimize processes, and make smarter decisions—combining mechanistic models, AI, and workflow automation into one unified environment.

We are growing fast and looking for passionate individuals to help us deliver lasting impact to our customers and scale our platform globally.

Key Responsibilities

Model Development & Simulation

  • Contribute to the development of mechanistic and hybrid models for unit operations (e.g., reactors, chromatography, crystallization).
  • Support model integration and dynamic simulation in Python.
  • Assist with sensitivity, identifiability, and parameter estimation analyses.

Workflow & Platform Support

  • Build or refine user-friendly modeling workflows for deployment in ModelFlow.
  • Support the development of light-weight apps or dashboards for internal testing and prototyping.

Automation & Data Handling

  • Help automate model runs and reporting pipelines.
  • Interface models with structured data (SQL, Databricks) and unstructured data (e.g., Excel).

Education

  • Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Chemical Engineering, Process Systems Engineering, or related fields.

Skills & Interests

  • Exposure to dynamic modeling, mass/energy balances, and reaction kinetics.
  • Interest in simulation, modeling workflows, and their application in real-world pharma/biotech contexts.
  • Basic to intermediate Python programming skills, especially with scientific libraries (e.g., NumPy, SciPy, pandas).

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Pyomo or CasADi.
  • Familiarity with bioprocesses or pharma case studies.
  • Curiosity about AI, workflow automation, or cloud-based platforms.

Soft Skills

  • Proactive, reliable, and self-organized.
  • Clear communicator and team collaborator.
  • Eager to learn and contribute to applied R&D in industry.

Why Join PolyModels Hub?

  • Flexible hybrid working – split your time between home and our London office.
  • Generous time off – 26 days of annual leave plus flexible bank holidays.
  • Modern workspace perks – access to office amenities, including collaborative spaces and refreshments.
  • Pension contributions – competitive employer contributions to help you plan for the future.
  • Equity incentives – participation in our Employee Incentive Plan, so you can grow with the company.
