Job Description - Sustainability Intern - Springer Nature Opening Doors Programme

Sustainability Intern - Springer Nature Opening Doors Programme

Are you looking for an internship that provides hands-on experience in sustainability and the chance to make connections at one of the largest publishers of education and research content?

The Springer Nature Opening Doors Sustainability internship is a paid opportunity in London, UK for students and recent graduates to gain experience in research, education and science news publishing in our journals, books or magazines.

Many perspectives and lived experiences remain underrepresented in the publishing industry. This underrepresentation has historically affected a wide range of groups, including Black people, Indigenous people, and people of colour, first‑generation university students, people from socio‑economically disadvantaged backgrounds, LGBTQ+ communities, people from underrepresented social castes, religious minorities and people with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions.

We are looking for talented candidates from all backgrounds, with excellent skills in a range of fields, and we are committed to creating an inclusive internship, with a cohort that reflects a broad range of voices and experiences.

The successful applicant will spend twelve months within the Sustainability team, part of the Corporate Affairs division of Springer Nature. If selected for this internship, your role will include:

  • Charitable contributions (Global and UK): Supporting the central administration of corporate donations, and the collection of data about other charitable donations made across Springer Nature, in line with the agreed approach and in liaison with finance colleagues. Working with internal communications and social media teams to create informative internal and external content, helping build awareness of donations made. Liaising with existing charity partners to identify other opportunities to engage (e.g. volunteering, events etc).

  • Community activities (London): Supporting our aims to be a responsible member of our local community in the King’s Cross area. Assist in maintaining relevant relationships (e.g. with schools, charities, local partners), tracking volunteering time and other in-kind giving. Supporting events such as volunteer recognition and recruitment to grow the number of colleagues volunteering locally. Supporting communications related to vocational programmes such as work experience (managed by HR) and school workshops to raise awareness and encourage business-wide support.

  • Employee engagement in sustainability/ Green Impact network (Global): Assist the Senior Sustainability Manager in providing support to the global Green Impact Network. For example, creating materials for events and activities, liaising with members of the networks on specific topics, updating relevant documentation and sharing success stories for newsletters and blog posts. Be an active member of the London Green Impact Network.

  • Other internal sustainability engagement: supporting SDG/sustainability related events and activities as required.

  • Providing limited administrative support to the sustainable business team, e.g. booking meetings/meeting rooms, and minuting meetings related to topics above.

What’s in it for you?

  • A paid internship, equivalent to London Living Wage

  • Hands-on experience at one of the largest academic publishing groups and the opportunity to learn from experienced publishing professionals

  • Support from a buddy from one of Springer Nature’s employee networks

  • Access to career development, training and events, including an overview of different business areas at Springer Nature and advice on the job application process

  • The opportunity to work on projects related to inclusion and sustainability in the publishing industry.
