Job Description - Caretaker

Job Title: Multi-Site Maintenance Staff/Caretaker
Location: Cornwall - St Austell/Cornwall
Salary: NJC 7 – NJC 13 – FTE £25,630 - £28,351

PART TIME ROLE - ACTUAL SALARY - £13,854 - £15,324

Hours 20 - Monday to Friday - 2pm - 6pm

Responsible to: Estate Manager

Job Purpose:

We are seeking a dedicated Multi-Site Maintenance Staff/Caretaker to maintain a high standard of premises maintenance across various sites in Cornwall. The role involves organising and carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance, ensuring compliance with regulatory and health & safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform general building maintenance tasks including carpentry, fixing locks, electrical, plumbing, drainage, painting, and decorating.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies and COSHH regulations.
  • Identify and mitigate risks/hazards.
  • Monitor and manage resources and stock levels.
  • Use IT systems to communicate and record information.
  • Maintain records and report major repair items to the Estates Manager.
  • Interact professionally with staff, visitors, pupils, and parents.
  • Organise and oversee contractors carrying out works on site.
  • Operate routine security arrangements to prevent unauthorised access and minimise theft and vandalism.
  • Carry out procedures in the event of fire, flood, breaking and entering, accident, or major damage.
  • Ensure external areas are free from litter, dirt, rubbish, slip, and trip hazards.

  • Practical knowledge and experience in building maintenance.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to work independently.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and solve problems proactively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to create effective working relationships.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and safeguarding pupil wellbeing.

Person Specification:

  • Relevant experience in general maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of electrical work, plumbing, and carpentry.
  • Proficiency in IT (Microsoft Office) and mobile phone use.
  • Level 2 or 3 Health and Safety qualifications.
  • GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) including English and maths.
  • Commitment to safeguarding pupil wellbeing and equality.
  • Ability to undertake physically demanding work and work on own initiative.
  • Strong team player with effective working relationships.

Additional Factors:

  • Current driving licence and willingness to drive between site locations.
