Job Description - Learning Support Assistant

Are you a patient, enthusiastic and resilient individual with a passion for supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? We are currently seeking a full-time Learning Support Assistant to join a forward-thinking mainstream primary school in West Hull, working within a specialist classroom setting dedicated to children with complex needs — particularly autism and non-verbal communication.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a meaningful role in a purpose-built environment, supporting children to thrive socially, emotionally and academically. You’ll be joining a dedicated and experienced team who are committed to inclusive practice and the development of every child.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small group support for pupils with autism and communication needs within a specialist classroom.

  • Use a range of strategies to support non-verbal children, encouraging engagement and interaction.

  • Assist in the delivery of structured routines and individualised learning activities under the guidance of the class teacher and SENDCo.

  • Promote the development of key life skills, emotional regulation and independence.

  • Contribute to assessment, planning, and review meetings as part of a collaborative team approach.

  • Support the implementation of communication and interaction-based interventions (full training provided).

  • Help create a safe, calm and supportive learning environment where children feel valued and understood.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
  • A Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent experience).

  • Experience supporting children with SEND, ideally autism and/or non-verbal needs.

  • An understanding or interest in communication approaches (e.g. PECs, Makaton, AAC tools – training available).

  • A calm, compassionate and consistent approach to behaviour and emotional support.

  • Strong teamwork skills and a proactive attitude towards learning and development.

  • A sound understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

Why Join Us?
  • Be part of an inclusive, child-centred school community.

  • Work in a supportive specialist setting with access to professional development.

  • Receive hands-on training in communication and SEND strategies.

  • Make a direct and lasting difference in the lives of children who need it most.

We’d love to hear from you. To apply, please send your CV to Thomas Peck at , or apply via the link provided.

Please note: An enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to apply) is essential. A strong understanding of safeguarding practices is required for this role.
