Pre-school Deputy Supervisor

St Paul’s Pre-school is a vibrant community-based setting in the heart of Winchester, with registered charity status. It is rated Good by Ofsted for the quality and standards of its early years provision.

You will deputise for the Supervisor in his/her absence, including holding the role of Deputy Safeguarding Officer with a particular focus on Health & Safety. You will have Key Person responsibilities over a group of children and their families, organise and lead activities to ensure children are working within the early years curriculum, towards learning goals. You will create a safe and welcoming environment within the pre-school and work with a range of people including children and their families, staff and professionals from other agencies. Our pre-school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

St Paul’s pre-school is a pack-away pre-school setting. The role therefore involves considerable physical work when setting up and packing away the pre-school equipment and resources.

Hours of Work:

The role is offered as a permanent contract (subject to successful completion of a six-month probationary period).

• 2-4 days per week, term time only, depending on availability.

In addition:

• All members of the teaching team will attend a staff meeting once every two weeks to review the children’s progress, planning and safeguarding matters.
• Members of the teaching team with responsibilities for key children are required to complete paid 'administration time’ of two hours per key child, each term.

Pay:

The position will be paid at our pay grade level of 'Deputy/Admin’ - currently £13.05 per hour.

Key roles

• Deputise for the Pre-school Supervisor, as required
• Deputy Safeguarding Officer with main focus on Health and Safety
• Role model an excellent, reflective Early Year’s teaching practice, with (desirable) EYTS, FdA in
• EY; Level 4 in EY or Level 3 in EY
• Lead on the production and timely maintenance of the Pre-school’s Self Evaluation Process
• Assist with teaching staff recruitment, induction and performance management
• Oversee continued professional development programmes for all teaching staff
• Support the Supervisor in overseeing all aspects of Pre-school teaching administration
• Liaison link with St. Paul’s Church (our landlords)

Key responsibilities
Senior leadership:

1. Deputise for the Pre-school Supervisor in all aspects of the day-to-day running of the Pre-school, in her/his absence.
2. As Deputy Safeguarding Officer, to ensure the Pre-school meets all safeguarding requirements effectively and to a high standard.
3. Contribute to the provision of a high quality teaching environment by role modelling an excellent, reflective Early Years teaching practice; and offering appropriate learning stimulation and support.
4. Lead the production and timely maintenance of the Pre-school’s Self Evaluation Process, encouraging collaborative input from across the teaching team.
5. Assist the Supervisor with the teaching staff recruitment process: including managing inductions; mentoring; and observing and assessing staff during the probation review period.
6. Support the ongoing performance management of all teaching staff: including formal peer-to-peer observations, identifying training needs and carrying out annual appraisals.
7. Devise and oversee a continued professional development programme for each member of teaching staff.
   

Early Years Practitioner:

1. Participate in (and lead, where appropriate) planning discussions, and support the delivery of short, medium and long-term learning plans for each pre-school child.
2. Participate in the 'Observation, Planning and Assessment’ cycle with the rest of the team.
3. Monitor the effectiveness of the pre-school curriculum and each child’s learning journey.
4. Share information with parents and other practitioners, as necessary.
5. Promote, initiate and participate in significant elements of inside and outside work, including leading outdoor learning.
6. Help ensure records are properly maintained: e.g. daily attendance register; accident and incident book; medicine book.
7. Contribute to and implement all pre-school policies and procedures, including safeguarding and equal opportunities.
8. Help ensure the pre-school is a safe environment for children; that equipment is safe; standards of hygiene are high; and safety procedures are implemented at all times.
9. Able to meet the physical demands of the pre-school day: bending, kneeling and crouching for periods of time; also lifting/holding children during planned activities; and changing nappies/toileting duties.
10. Assist in setting up and packing away the pre-school setting, ensuring that the physical environment presents the children with interesting, creative and engaging situations. Set-up and packing away involves considerable physical work, including lifting.

Communication and Administration:

1. Support the Supervisor in overseeing all aspects of Pre-school teaching administration: including overseeing children’s tracking and development plans, drafting staff meeting agendas, checking monthly staff timesheets.
2. Share responsibility for the writing of the parent Pre-school Newsletter.
3. Liaise and work effectively with the Pre-school Chair and Committee Officers. (The Pre-school is a charity, run by a Committee of elected parent volunteers).
4. Build and maintain links with range of people including school staff, visiting professionals and relevant outside agencies, parents, children and families; and visitors and student placements.
5. Build and maintain a strong working relationship with our landlord, St. Paul’s Church.
6. Lead training sessions on a wide variety of EYFS and non-EYFS topics for staff and parents.
7. Support and lead, where required, the planning, organising and management of any Pre-school trips.
