Job Description - SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Position: SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant

Location: Kempston

Salary: £20,000 - £23,000

Sector: Education and Training

Start Date: September start

Are you a qualified SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting pupils with additional needs? Are you looking to deepen your impact and take the next step in your career in Kempston - either within education or towards a clinical support role?

Join an outstanding Special Educational Needs school in Kempston as a SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant, where you'll be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition, Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, and other complex profiles.

Your Role as an SEN HLTA:

  • Deliver targeted academic and behavioural interventions, 1:1 and in small groups
  • Lead and support learning activities in collaboration with teaching staff and therapists
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of individual education and behaviour plans
  • Foster emotional regulation, independence, and positive engagement in learning

What We're Looking For:

  • HLTA Status (Level 4 or equivalent qualification)
  • Proven experience supporting children or young people with SEN, ideally in specialist settings
  • A calm, reflective, and proactive approach to behaviour and communication support
  • A genuine interest in professional development and SEN best practice

Progression & Professional Development:

This role in Kempston offers a structured progression pathway, with opportunities to develop into clinical or educational specialisms depending on your career goals.

Many of our experienced SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant move into:

  • Assistant Psychologist
  • Clinical Support Worker
  • Behaviour Specialist Roles
  • Training pathways towards Mental Health, Educational Psychology, or Therapeutic Services

As a SEN Higher Level Teaching Assistant you'll work closely with a team of clinicians including Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, and Occupational Therapists, gaining insight and experience in a therapeutic, education and training environment.

Alternatively, you may wish to continue along a school-based path, developing into education and training roles such as:

  • SEN Teacher (via QTS/QTLS pathways)
  • Pastoral Lead or Inclusion Manager
  • SEND Coordinator (SENCO)
  • Further study in Education Leadership, Trauma-Informed Practice, or Specialist SEND Support
  • Ongoing CPD, coaching, and internal training are built into your role to ensure you're constantly growing, supported, and progressing.
