Job Description - Training and Engagement Officer (Wales)

Job title: Training and Engagement Officer (Wales)

Responsible to: Development Manager

Location: Home-based, with regular travel across Wales and occasional trips to the charity’s Head Office in Ashford, Kent

Hours: 0.5 Full time equivalent (FTE), 17.5 hours per week

Contract: Permanent

Salary: £31,116 FTE (£15,558 actual salary)

Job Purpose

This role will deliver Glaucoma UK’s outreach, training and engagement strategy in Wales, including raising awareness among the general public, providing services for people affected by glaucoma and delivering training to health care professionals.

Main Duties

Service Delivery and Community Engagement

  • Conduct community outreach by building trusted relationships, gathering insights from under-represented communities at higher risk of glaucoma, ensuring these insights inform service delivery.
  • Raise awareness by delivering talks, running campaigns, and distributing materials that encourage regular eye testing, treatment adherence, and engagement with Glaucoma UK’s services.
  • Support people with glaucoma by maintaining local support groups, attending clinics, organising patient conferences, and distributing Glaucoma UK information resources.
  • Deliver training sessions for eye care professionals, demonstrating practical support tools and techniques for managing glaucoma, including addressing barriers to treatment adherence.
  • Organise and Co-deliver digital support programmes such as webinars and virtual support groups, ensuring they meet the needs of service users.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Contribute to partnership development by actively engaging with regional health bodies, chronic condition organisations, and community groups to expand service reach, respond to collaboration opportunities and increase awareness of glaucoma.
  • Write content for Glaucoma UK’s newsletters, publications and digital platforms to highlight outreach efforts, promote regional events and share community success stories.
  • Coordinate with the fundraising team to align outreach activities with broader organisational goals, supporting campaigns and member engagement where appropriate.
  • Engage with volunteers as required to support the delivery of outreach services.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of all outreach, training and engagement activities to support monitoring and evaluation processes.
  • Collect and analyse data to support the Development Manager in assessing the effectiveness of outreach services, identify opportunities for improvement or to develop new initiatives in response to community needs.

General Responsibilities

  • Comply with policies and legislation by following all Glaucoma UK and statutory procedures.
  • Promote sustainable practices by incorporating environmentally responsible approaches into all work.
  • Travel to represent Glaucoma UK at external events, meetings and networks.
  • Pursue continuous learning by participating in professional development activities, including relevant conferences, workshops and peer networks.
  • Undertake additional duties as agreed with the Development Manager, adapting to changing priorities and emerging opportunities.

  • Shows flexibility and willingness to travel, including attending events across Wales, and visits to head office in Ashford, Kent. Adjusts work hours as necessary to facilitate occasional work outside of office hours including overnight stays. Time off in lieu is provided.

Desirable

  • An understanding of the health and social care landscape and the services available for people with, or at risk of, eye disease (no specialist experience is required and training will be provided).
  • Spoken and written Welsh language.
