Director of Maths

Job reference: REQ001434

Salary: £70k-£80k depending on experience

Contractual hours: 37.5

Basis: Full Time

Region: National

Closing date: 3 July 2024

The role

As Director of Maths for our extensive portfolio of Secondary Academies (50+) you will embody our ethos of bringing out ’the best in everyone’. Leading subject specific improvement work, you and your highly skilled team will support departments to raise standards in Maths and improve progress and attainment, working effectively with our team of existing advisers (in other subjects as well as maths). This is a particularly exciting time to join us as we are also about to launch a 5-year Maths Excellence programme to raise achievement of high-ability, disadvantaged students. This is an opportunity to lead and shape a programme with huge potential to transform lives through mathematics.

Our Secondary Education Team is at the heart of our school improvement strategy. Working collaboratively with Heads of Department and their teams you will make a difference to thousands of students’ lives by:

  • Leading work in Secondary Academies across the Trust to raise standards in maths in all year groups.
  • Visiting schools to provide direct guidance and feedback to maths teachers, subject leaders and school leaders.
  • Increasing the capacity of leaders and teachers (including trainees and ECTs), to develop the quality of teaching and learning, helping departments to make sustainable improvements.
  • Developing resources to support the effective teaching and assessment of maths throughout our schools, based on the United Learning curriculum.
  • Leading the work across the Trust on the Maths Excellence Programme, working closely with the 14 participating schools and the Maths Excellence Fund.

Practicalities

The role will be predominantly field-based, with substantial travel to our schools across the country – from Bognor Regis in the South all the way North to Carlisle. However, homeworking is also a core element of the role, and we envisage a broadly 60%-40% split between the two, with considerable autonomy in determining when and where school visits take place. There will also be times when you will need to travel to our main office locations in London or Peterborough.

United Learning is committed to encouraging and enabling flexible working opportunities throughout our schools and Central Office, and we will accept applications from those preferring a part-time role. This role is initially offered as Term-time, full-time for 41 weeks Please state your preference in your application.

There is flexibility around the start date, given the length of notice periods in teaching.

About you

The ideal candidate will have the following experience, attributes and behaviours.

Essential:

  • Extensive experience of teaching KS3 and KS4 maths.
  • Proven experience of identifying and implementing effective strategies for improving outcomes.
  • Outstanding subject knowledge and the ability to communicate their passion for maths to others.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the curriculum and assessment in maths and be keen to contribute to current curriculum development.
  • Resilience, motivation, and commitment to drive up standards of achievement.
  • Experience of leading a high performing team.
  • Experience of coaching teachers and team members to improve their practice.
  • Proven experience of working autonomously and delivering at pace to agreed timelines and project plans.
  • Be excited to share their knowledge and expertise with a diverse family of schools and be able to travel to schools across the country on a regular basis.
  • Have outstanding communication skills, with the ability to leverage influence with all levels of the organisation (including headteachers).
  • Understand and respect the importance of diverse cultures and faiths within the school, with a commitment to equal opportunities.
  • Be aligned with United Learning’s values and embody our ethos of bringing out ‘the best in everyone’.

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching and improving outcomes in maths at KS5.
  • Experience of leading or feeding into a research programme.
