Job Description - AFN Elder Driver - Kuukpik Corporation

COMPANY OVERVIEW


Kuukpik Corporation was established in 1973 under the provisions of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). It owns the surface rights to portions of the Colville River Delta, located 50 miles west of Prudhoe Bay.


Kuukpik Corporation successfully negotiated a comprehensive surface-use agreement. This agreement established provisions for education, training, preferences in contracting, employment, and the environment for the village of Nuiqsut.


Kuukpik’s mission is to develop innovative opportunities, partnerships, and leadership to ensure and perpetuate our people’s self-sufficiency, economic growth, and cultural heritage.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR


The AFN Elder Driver position provides safe and reliable transportation for elders attending the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) Convention. The ideal candidate should possess a clean driving record, prior experience in passenger transportation, and a strong respect for elders. This role necessitates exceptional time management, communication skills, and a customer service-oriented approach. 



Start Date: October 11, 2025


End Date: October 18, 2025 





ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS



  • Safely transport elders to and from the convention venue, hotels, and other designated locations in a timely manner.

  • Assist elders with boarding and exiting the vehicle, ensuring their comfort and safety.

  • Treat all elders with equal respect and courtesy.

  • Follow all traffic laws and safety regulations while driving.

  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of the vehicle, performing daily checks for safety (fuel, brakes, tires, lights, etc.).

  • Communicate promptly with the Event Coordinator regarding schedules, routes, and any changes or concerns.

  • Provide exceptional customer service, exhibiting patience, kindness, and understanding with all passengers.

  • Handle any emergencies or unforeseen events calmly and efficiently, seeking help if needed.

  • Keep a log of trips, passenger counts, and any incidents that occur during transport.

  • Daily hours should not exceed eight hours per day, with a maximum of 12 hours per day. 

  • Other duties as assigned


 


REQUIREMENTS



  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Experience driving a passenger vehicle, van, or shuttle bus.

  • Knowledge of the local area, including convention locations and hotels, is preferred.

  • Ability to assist elders in and out of the vehicle safely.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow a set schedule.

  • Patient, respectful, and empathetic attitude toward elders.

  • The ability to speak and understand the Inupiaq language is preferred

  • Must pass a driving record check.


 


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE



  • High School Diploma


 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS



  • This position may require long hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

  • The role involves sitting for extended periods while driving and assisting passengers with boarding and exiting the vehicle.

  • Must be able to lift and carry items, such as wheelchairs or walkers, as needed.


 


TRAVEL REQUIRED



  • Willing to fly a driver from Nuiqsut with the Elders to perform duties.
