GENERAL PURPOSE

The Beautification Seasonal Employee is responsible for the aesthetic maintenance and upkeep of downtown Howell and other city-owned areas. This role ensures a positive visitor experience by maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment through dedicated landscaping and horticultural care.

Works under the supervision of the DPW Operations Manager.

None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform detailed weeding and plant care in downtown flower beds, planters, and city-owned green spaces.


• Maintain the overall cleanliness and appearance of high-traffic public areas, including litter removal and debris clearing.


• Water and fertilize ornamental plants and flowers to ensure health and longevity.


• Conduct routine inspections of designated beautification areas to identify and address maintenance needs.


• Enforce city policies and safety regulations while performing duties in public spaces.


• Operate light equipment and hand tools required for horticultural upkeep and minor maintenance.


• Support and help coordinate city-sponsored floral displays and downtown events.


• All other duties as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be at least 18 years of age.


• Previous experience in landscaping, gardening, or grounds maintenance preferred.


• Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high aesthetic standards.


• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.


• Ability to work independently and interact professionally with the public.


• Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.


• Willingness to work flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers and reach with hands and arms to complete maintenance tasks.


• The employee is frequently required to walk and stand for extended periods on pavement and uneven ground.


• The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crouch to access flower beds and planters.


• The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.


• Employees must be able to differentiate colors to properly maintain floral displays and landscaping designs.
