Job Description - Camp Nature Specialist


Nature Specialist  

Camp Hoffman - West Kingston, RI 

Join our team at Camp Hoffman as a Nature Specialist and help create unforgettable experiences for campers in an immersive and fun-filled environment. As a Nature Specialist, you'll lead camps nature program, help lead all camp programming and assist the administrative team in other areas as needed. 

Schedule: June 22nd to August 11th (Sunday-Friday) (Off June 28th & August 9th) 

Staff will have two hours of scheduled time off daily, one evening per week off (Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday) with a set curfew and be off from Friday evening to Sunday Morning. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Facilitates camp nature programming to include but not limited to hiking, Leave No Trace, ponding, tree, bird, and insect identification, etc. 

  • Designs lesson plans and program curriculum for nature program area. 

  • Facilitates engaging content that is age appropriate and follows camp policies. 

  • Aids in carrying out pre-camp training in specialized program areas as needed and under the direction of the Camp Director and Administrative team. 

  • Assist in supervising all aspects of an overnight and/or day camper's day including activities, mealtimes, rest hours, bedtime and after-hour duties as assigned. 

  • Work in a team with counselors, program, and administrative staff around camp. 

  • Follow a schedule with promptness and flexibility when unexpected changes occur. 

  • Participate in all aspects of camp life including staff training and meetings, daily activities, all camp activities, skits, songs, kapers (chores), cookouts, etc. as assigned. 

  • Participates in all emergency drills  

  • Assist in the opening and closing of camp as directed. 

  • Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and upkeep of camp and equipment. 

  • Responsibility for the health and safety of the campers, reporting concerns promptly. 

  • Keeps records, reports, and inventories as required. 

  • Adhere to Girl Scout, State of Rhode Island, and American Camp Association standards 

  • Live in a unit near campers or in a cabin with campers as assigned. 

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications: 

  • Must be 18 years or older. 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 

  • Current CPR/First Aid Certification (can obtain during training if needed)    

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 

  • Must have the visual, auditory, and physical ability to quickly identify and appropriately respond to environmental and other hazards related to activities and emergencies at camp, as well as generally uphold all safety standards. 

  • Previous experience in Girl Scouts, camps, and/ or education is a plus, but not required. 

  • Have successful experience in planning and/or implementing environmental education 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time. 

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. 

  • Ability to walk/hike 3+ miles per day to include rough and uneven terrain 

  • Ability to plan, lead, and participate in program activities in a variety of indoor and/or outdoor settings 

  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly in an emergency situation.  

  • Live and work in an outdoor rustic environment with exposure to heat, humidity, sun, rain, uneven terrain and other elements.

Compensation 

  • Nature Specialist: Anticipated Summer Salary of $3,360
