Job Description - Continuing Education Animation Instructor for Youth/Teen (Ages 12-18)

SUMMARY

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design seeks qualified instructors for part-time, temporary positions teaching animation to youth and teens, ages 12-18. The animation instructor must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.

DETAILS

Animation instructors are responsible for developing curriculum and teaching animation concepts and techniques. Most classes include a mix of 2D and 3D stop-motion and hand-drawn animation with an introduction to digital tools for editing and composition. 

Specific openings include: 

Pre-College residential program for ages 15-18;  Animation major.

July 28 - August 1, 2025, Monday - Friday, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.m..

58 hours of instruction

RATE OF PAY:

The starting rate is $57.82 per teaching hour.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Teach animation concepts, techniques, methods, and software, as appropriate.
  • Develop the course syllabus with learning outcomes and methodologies, required materials, and a detailed course calendar.
  • Provide guidance and support to young students.
  • Dependent on class, work with and mentor teaching assistants.
  • Develop an inclusive, collaborative, supportive classroom environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Work collaboratively with MCAD staff as needed.
  • Represent MCAD’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Create and embrace a community of equal opportunities and inclusivity.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary degree in animation or related area, required. Applicants without a degree may be considered if other qualifications are demonstrated.
  • At least three years experience teaching youth and/or teens and developing engaging curriculum, required. However, relevant professional experience in the selected area will also be considered, and candidates with strong professional experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience working with high school or middle school students, required. 
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop and After Effects), Stop Motion Studio and Google Suite, required.
  • Experience working with young students from a range of backgrounds, required.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, required.
  • Advanced degree, preferred.

ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in a classroom environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Upon request, reasonable accommodation will be provided to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Must be able to move around the classroom to support students at tables, desks and floor.There may be extended periods of standing. 
  • Must be able to move quickly to monitor students and ensure their safety while supervising.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand, as well as being receptive to others’ perspectives. 
  • The ability to observe details.
  • The ability to move boxes and supplies around campus, weighing up to 25 pounds.

Founded in 1886, Minneapolis College of Art and Design is located in the rich creative community of the Twin Cities. Recognized nationally and internationally for its innovative approaches to art and design  education, MCAD is home to approximately 800 students from 45 states and 15 countries. The college offers bachelor’s degrees in fourteen disciplines including arts entrepreneurship, design, fine arts, and media arts; one MFA; three online master’s degrees; and continuing education classes for all ages. Through the core curriculum, students focus on their careers and craft by learning technical and professional skills while developing their creative leadership capabilities.
