We are an innovative organization with a $27 million expansion project underway and will be opening North Carolina's first regional campus for pets and people. As a spay & neuter surgeon contracted with the SPCA of Wake County, you will be working with our experienced staff of three full-time veterinary medical assistants. They are highly efficient and are committed to providing high quality, high volume spay & neuter services for public pets and SPCA pets!

Category: Contract
Location: Raleigh, NC (SPCA of Wake County Saving Lives Spay/Neuter Clinic)
Compensation: Competitive contract rate (per diem, hourly, or per surgery)          Schedule: Surgeries are scheduled Monday-Friday, surgeon needed from 9am-2pm (times may vary depending on the volume of surgeries)

About Us: SPCA Wake is expanding services across central and eastern NC, including high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) for both SPCA pets and the public. Our clinic team is experienced, efficient, and focused on delivering excellent surgical outcomes and streamlined flow.

Role Overview: We are seeking an experienced contract veterinarian to perform high-quality, high-volume spay and neuter surgeries only. This role is clinic-based and focused exclusively on surgical sterilization for SPCA pets and publicly owned pets. Flexible scheduling available (from occasional shifts to multiple days per week). No general shelter medicine duties, diagnostics, appointment care, or on-call.

Key Responsibilities:
- Perform HQHVSN for cats and dogs (SPCA and public clients), meeting established efficiency and quality standards
- Conduct brief pre-op assessments to determine surgical/anesthetic candidacy
- Direct anesthesia and analgesia protocols in partnership with trained staff; ensure aseptic technique and patient safety
- Manage intraoperative decision-making and complications as needed
- Oversee immediate postoperative recovery parameters; approve discharge readiness
- Provide clear postoperative instructions and medical record documentation
- Adhere to clinic SOPs, controlled substance regulations, and HQHVSN best practices
- Collaborate with clinic leadership to optimize surgical flow, patient safety, and efficiency
- Maintain a professional, safety-first, fear-free handling approach

Preferred Experience:
- Demonstrated proficiency in HQHVSN with efficient case flow; comfort with up to 40 surgeries per day
- Ability to complete a high surgical volume with consistent quality (case-mix dependent)

Requirements:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD)
- Active North Carolina veterinary license (or ability to obtain prior to start)
- Eligible to work with controlled substances (individual DEA registration or ability to work under clinic DEA as applicable)
- Proficiency in current HQHVSN standards, anesthesia, analgesia, and sterile technique
- Clear, concise communication and strong teamwork skills

Work Environment and Physical Requirements
- Exposure to typical clinical risks: anesthetic gases, sharps, disinfectants/chemicals, zoonotic diseases, and high-noise environments
- Standing for extended periods; lifting up to 50 lbs; fine motor skills and excellent hand-eye coordination required
- Ability to remain calm and decisive in a fast-paced surgical setting

Schedule:
- Flexible; you choose available days. Clinic days are weekdays; no remote work, on-call, or after-hours duties.

How to Apply:
Email your CV, summary of HQHVSN experience (including typical daily volume and species mix), desired availability, and preferred rate structure to [email protected]. Only qualified candidates will be contacted. No phone calls, please.
