Job Description - Family Barn Swim Instructor (Summer 2026)

The Club provides a four-season experience with recreation, dining, wellness, and outdoor adventure woven into every aspect of daily life. POSITION SUMMARY:

Swim Instructors are responsible for delivering high-quality, safe, and engaging swim instruction to members and guests of all ages at the Family Barn Pool. This position ensures a positive, structured, and developmentally appropriate learning environment while upholding the highest standards of water safety, professionalism, and hospitality. Swim Instructors work closely with the Recreation Manager, Aquatics Coordinator and Lifeguard team to maintain a safe aquatic environment while representing Martis Camp’s culture of service, excellence, and teamwork.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Swim Instruction & Safety

  • Provide private and group swim lessons for youth and adults of varying skill levels.
  • Develop and implement structured lesson plans based on swimmer ability and progression.
  • Teach water safety skills, stroke development, breath control, floating, and aquatic confidence.
  • Maintain constant visual supervision of all participants during lessons.
  • Enforce all pool rules and safety policies in coordination with the Lifeguard team.
  • Respond appropriately and professionally in emergency situations in accordance with certification training.

Member Experience & Hospitality

  • Greet members and families warmly and professionally before and after lessons.
  • Communicate swimmer progress, goals, and recommendations clearly with parents/participants.
  • Create a fun, encouraging, and confidence-building environment.
  • Demonstrate patience, positivity, and professionalism at all times.
  • Represent Martis Camp with polished presentation and guest-focused service.

Pool Operations Support

  • Assist with lesson scheduling coordination as directed by Aquatics leadership.
  • Maintain organization of teaching equipment including kickboards, fins, noodles, and training aids.
  • Support opening and closing procedures as needed.
  • Assist with swim team, youth camps, aquatic programs, and special events when requested.
  • Report maintenance issues, safety concerns, or incidents immediately to Aquatics leadership.

Team Communication & Professionalism

  • Communicate effectively with the Aquatics Coordinator, Lifeguards, Recreation Manager, and F&B staff.
  • Attend required staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Uphold all club policies, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and model appropriate behavior at all times.
  • Embody the Martis Camp “Ambassador” culture of teamwork, positivity, and accountability.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross or equivalent) required.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification required.
  • Prior swim instruction experience preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and families.
  • Ability to remain calm, attentive, and safety-focused in a busy pool environment.
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays as required.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to enter and exit the pool repeatedly during instruction.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim strokes and water skills.
  • Must be able to swim 300 yards without stopping.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods on pool deck.
  • Must be able to lift and move equipment up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to respond quickly and physically in emergency situations.


WAGE AND BENEFITS:

  • Hourly wage of $18-22 /hour
