Job Description - Field Interviewer-Hybrid

Do you have a background in education, childcare, youth programs, or working directly with children and families?

Are you passionate about supporting children and making a positive impact in your local community?
Do you value flexibility, autonomy, and meaningful work?

If so, the Field Interviewer opportunity at Vital Research could be the perfect fit for you!

About Us

Since 1982, Vital Research has been on a mission to create vibrant communities by ensuring all voices and experiences are represented through inclusive social science research and evaluation. Our core services of evaluation design and research methodology, data collection, and results dissemination allow us to achieve our vision: a world where every person is valued and has equal opportunity to live life to its fullest.

About the Role

Field Interviewers play a key role in collecting confidential survey data that informs critical social research. This role requires empathy, clear and transparent verbal communication skills, and the ability to be a self-starter. This is a flexible, autonomous, independent contractor role where you set your own schedule and work at your own pace.

Using a company-provided tablet and software, Field Interviewers contact pre-identified participants to conduct surveys via video or in-person interviews. As you collect participant answers, you’ll collaborate with our internal research team to ensure high-quality, ethical data collection that helps elevate underserved voices while contributing to the overall success of the research team.

About the Project

Vital Research, in partnership with the State of Colorado, is seeking experienced Field Interviewers for a statewide project focused on surveying children and their families on their experiences with the Colorado Children’s HCBS Waiver Program. The child waiver program provides services and supports to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities as well as complex health needs and/or life-limiting illnesses. The project will begin with a mandatory virtual training the week of April 20th and will continue through May of 2026 (or until all surveys are completed).

Interviewers will conduct 45-to-60 minute interviews with children and young adults (ages 8-20). During each session, interviewers are responsible for building rapport, creating a comfortable and respectful environment, and administering interviews in accordance with study protocols. Following interviews, interviewers will be asked to share observations and provide feedback to Vital Research staff to support continuous improvement and data quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reach out to families from a provided list and schedule/complete video or in-person surveys with children

  • Conduct 1 survey per day or 5 surveys per week using assigned tools and protocols

  • Accurately capture participant responses using company-provided tablets and software, with close attention to detail and confidentiality

  • Maintain professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity in all interactions

  • Communicate regularly with the research team for updates and support

This Role May Be a Great Fit If You:

  • Are comfortable building quick rapport with children and their families and helping them feel safe, heard, and engaged during interactions

  • Have experience conducting interviews, surveys, or working in research settings

  • Are comfortable contacting families by phone and conducting in-person and video interviews

  • Have experience working with children with disabilities, including intellectual and developmental disabilities

  • Are detail-oriented and comfortable using tablets or mobile technology

  • Enjoy working independently and managing your own schedule

  • Have access to a personal vehicle for in-person interviews

Compensation & Flexibility

You have full control over your schedule; we request that you complete a minimum of 5 surveys per week. Compensation is paid per completed survey, with rates varying by interview method:

  • $100 per completed video (Zoom) interview

  • $110+ per completed in-person interview, depending on travel distance

Training and orientation are provided as follows:

  • $50 upon completion of pre-training modules

  • $300 upon completion of virtual training

  • $50 upon completion of post-training tasks

Ready to Make an Impact?
Join a purpose-driven team that values equity, empathy, and community. Apply by March 13, 2026 to be part of our mission to ensure every voice is heard and represented.
