Job Description - Journeyman Painter On-Call, DIR-Compliant Skilled and Trained

HAMANAKA PAINTING CO., INC. is seeking qualified Journeyman Painters to work on an on-call, ongoing basis to meet California Skilled and Trained Workforce requirements under Public Contract Code §§ 2600–2603. This is not a permanent full-time position but an established on-call arrangement to ensure compliance with S&TW standards whenever projects require certified journeyman labor.
Position Purpose:
This role provides journeyman-level painting labor for projects subject to Skilled and Trained Workforce requirements. Successful applicants will be dispatched as needed for qualifying projects and must be fully capable of performing all journeyman painting duties with minimal supervision.
Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following:
Completion of a California Division of Apprenticeship Standards (DAS)-approved apprenticeship in Painting & Decorating, or
Verifiable 4+ years of journeyman-level experience in the trade, consistent with DIR definitions.
Additional requirements:
OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
Respirator fit-test ready; must remain clean-shaven daily for compliance.
Demonstrated proficiency with ladders, scaffolding, aerial lifts, and fall protection systems.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks.
Reliable transportation to job sites.
Willingness to travel out of town occasionally; notice will be provided.
Core Responsibilities:
Perform all surface preparation and finishing at the journeyman level: cleaning, sanding, patching, caulking, masking, priming, and coating.
Apply coatings by brush, roller, and spray, including primers, epoxies, sealers, stains, varnishes, and specialty finishes.
Read and interpret project plans, specifications, and finish schedules.
Ensure compliance with all safety standards, including PPE, respirator use, and hazard communication.
Support the company’s Skilled and Trained Workforce commitments by serving as a qualified journeyman resource.
Follow all company policies, procedures, and supervisor instructions.
Maintain professional standards of conduct and set a positive example for apprentices and helpers.
Work Conditions & Legal Compliance:
Rest and meal periods will be provided in accordance with California Labor Code §§ 226.7 and 512 and must be taken as directed.
Work may occur outdoors in varied weather conditions and may include overtime, evenings, or weekends.
The workplace is maintained in compliance with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, and company safety standards.

Employment Status:
This position is on-call, ongoing, and project-based. Journeyman Painters hired under this posting will remain in our Skilled and Trained Workforce pool and be dispatched as needed for qualifying projects.
Compensation:
Compensation will be consistent with prevailing wage determinations when applicable and in compliance with DIR requirements.
