Long-Term Substitute: Middle School English

Founded in 1974 by The Reverend Stephen B. Swann with eight seventh-grade students, today ESD educates and inspires 1,150 students in grades beginner (age 3) through grade 12. ESD is located in Dallas, a modern metropolis of North Texas, and a commercial and cultural hub in the region.

At the heart of ESD are talented and compassionate faculty and staff who are the backbone of our institution and paramount to the school’s success. They adeptly balance rigorous, college preparatory coursework with understanding and nurturing of the whole child. Classes are small, with an overall student-teacher ratio of 7:1. Purpose:  Beginning in early August through the first week in September, this long-term substitute position involves teaching 4 sections of Middle School English/Language Arts.  They help students learn to read with understanding by providing strategies for engaging with a variety of texts in many genres, both fiction and nonfiction, and they create a classroom with opportunities to hone skills in creative expression, communication, and collaboration. ESD Faculty are lifelong learners who welcome opportunities for professional development and collegial conversation leading to the development of effective, inquiry-based education in the English classroom.  

Essential Functions: 

• Teach 4 sections of Middle School English Language Arts, delivering instruction aligned with ESD’s Mission. 
• Provide integral and varied support, planning, oversight, and communication as an academic advisor in the middle school. 
• Offer significant involvement and/or leadership in an extracurricular capacity as a club advisor or athletic coach. 
• Participate and engage in professional activities and gatherings at team, departmental, divisional, and school-wide levels. 
• Use appropriate technology in support of the curriculum of the twenty-first century global classroom. 
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues. 
• Work closely with colleagues on the school’s curricular initiatives. 
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 

Abuse Risk Management Standards:

• Adheres to policies related to boundaries with students. 
• Attends required abuse risk management training.
• Adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising students. 
• Reports suspicious and inappropriate behaviors. 
• Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements. 

Working Environment:

• Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling.
• Generally, 40% sitting, 40% walking, and 20% standing.
• Minimal temperature variations
• Off-site travel to include rustic environments and occasional overnight trips.
• Generally, a hazard-free environment.

• Bachelor’s degree in English or education —Master’s degree preferred. 
• Minimum three years of experience as a Middle School or Upper Elementary English/Language Arts teacher. 
• Proficiency in educational technology and twenty-first century pedagogy. 
• Commitment to participate broadly in the life of the school. 
• Effective interpersonal skills; specifically for interacting with students and faculty members. 
• Demonstrated record of effectively differentiating instruction and using instructional technology. 
• Experience with school change and facilitating teacher collaboration.
