Job Description - Mono Basin Waterfowl Ecologist


Job Summary:
The Mono-basin Waterfowl Ecologist implements boat- and ground-based surveys of waterfowl in the Mono Basin. Uses data to complete analysis and draft reports. Provides project leadership and logistical support for research being completed.


This is a seasonal, part-time position, limited to up to 160 hours of work to support survey implementation and data analysis in the Mono Basin between September 2025 and November 2025.

Compensation:
$35-$40 per hour. Benefits limited to up to 40 hours of CA paid sick leave, which accrues every bi-weekly pay period. 

Essential Functions:
Field Work & Data Analysis: 80%
  • Leads field surveys in the Mono Basin including collection, management, statistical analysis, modeling, and reporting/publishing of data and study findings regarding waterfowl ecology in the Mono Basin.
  • Completes field work with little or no supervision in the Mono Basin counting birds from boats and on the ground, measuring vegetation and taking weather measurements.
  • Ensures consistent and reliable standardized data are gathered and stored, backed up, and available for analysis.
  • Enters findings into software and ensures quality control of data including scanning and archiving. 
  • Uses data to establish results and draft summaries/reports.
  • Interacts with the local science community; attends meetings, workshops, and symposia to disseminate Point Blue science.
  • Participates in intra- and inter-organizational studies, and identifies and provides commentary on new approaches, research opportunities and conservation planning.
Communicating Scientific Research: 10%
  • Facilitates field visits for key supporters, discusses work process and outcomes with the Board of Directors and other funders.
  • Maintains positive relationship with key external partners to ensure access to private and government owned land.
  • Contributes, as needed, to funding proposals.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all data collection techniques used in the projects overseen and ensures field data collected is of the highest quality.
  • Analyzes results using proper statistical techniques and GIS tools.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and experience surveying the flora and fauna in Mono Basin
  • Provides guidance to interns and staff with project summaries and/or manuscripts (e.g., writing, researching, and/or analysis).
Other Duties as Assigned: 10%
  • Perform special projects and research as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility:
None.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of and extensive (5+ years) experience with field data collection practices (boat, aerial and ground) and procedures for waterfowl at Mono Lake.
  • Knowledge of natural history of Mono Basin.
  • Knowledge of data management best practices.
  • Knowledge of ecology of waterfowl using the Mono Basin.
  • Knowledge of plant life of the Mono Basin.
  • Knowledge of statistics and skills analyzing data sets of waterfowl surveys at Mono Lake.
  • Skills operating a computer including Microsoft Office software and data management software.
  • Ability to work well with others and foster relationships.
Certifications and/or Licenses:
  • Valid California driver’s license and favorable driving history, and proof of auto insurance.
  • Ability to obtain relevant certificates, permits, or licenses related to working with birds.
Preferred Education and Experience:
This position requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, environmental science, or related field; and 5 years of experience working with waterfowl at Mono Lake.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
  • This position operates in remote field locations with uneven terrain, limited vehicle access, limited cell phone receptions, and sometimes in a solitary capacity.
  • Work environment is mostly outdoors but indoor work will consist of mostly sitting at a desk. 
  • Ability to hike in uneven terrain while carrying gear and/or backpack.
  • Ability to operate an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV).
  • Ability to survey birds from a small boat.
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist, and turn
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard and calculator
Position Type, Expected Hours of Work, and Travel:
  • This is a part-time position.
  • Days and hours of work vary depending on season, fieldwork, and timeline requirements.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
  • Only travel to and from the field site is expected for this position.
  • Must supply their own housing in the Mono Basin
